MS Word decides that a file is read-only

Many have experienced this and I haven't found any solutions on this or other forums.

Normally, I like to save the word document I am working on every once in a while. The first few times I do this, there is no problem, but eventually Word will decide that the file you are currently working on is read-only and cannot be saved.

The read-only box in the file properties is NOT ticked and all security permissions are in force for the user.

Please help. I am tired of saving my file under a different name every 5 minutes.

This is such an annoying problem, isn't it? I keep backup copies of all my super-important documents, just in the event that this happens. Also, sometimes you can clear the problem by shutting down and rebooting. Still annoying though, just as much as continually having to rename the file.

Here's a Vista Tutorial from Brink. Read-only File and Folder Attribute. Good luck, and let us know how it works.

Hi,

I've the same probleme with the following configuration :

Roaming profile + Folder Redirection.

"My Document" is redirected to a Personal Folder located on Windows 2003 R2 Server

And randomly, Excel or Word 2003 files are opened as read-only. If I wait a moment and retry the document is not read-only anymore. By the way the right on the folder or files hasn't been changed.

Regards,

Raphael

Yes, my Word docs will occasionally open up as read-only, and I also find that if I close them, and either: 1. reopen them from Windows Explorer, 2. reopen them after opening another file, or 3. shutting down and rebooting, they open properly.

Well, ironically I'm now having this exact problem with a very long (125+ page) and extremely crucial Office 2007 doc that opens up as "read-only" and, of course, can't be saved or edited. When I check its Properties, Read-Only is not checked, so I'm really stumped. And, none of my own advice works!!! It usually does, but not this time. I've even tried copying the contents of the file and creating a new one, but that didn't solve the problem. Then, I tried to save my backup copy of the file, but after shutting down and re-booting, even the back up copy (which I didn't think was corrupted) opened up as "read-only" also. This is really frustrating because of the importance of this file. Any help out there????
