Skype video problem

Using Vista Business. Cannot recieve video using Skype. All downloads fine and their test functions are all positive. When I call audio only it is fine and my video also looks good but when others turn on their cameras or if I make a video call as soon as they answer with video my screen blinks and error box leave me one choice to end program. Looks like something is blocking incoming video. How do I fix this problem, hope someone can help......Marv

Hi Marv,

1. Click on the Start Orb and then click on Control Panel. (All steps have screenshots below and you can click on any screenshot to enlarge it.)

1.JPG

2. Double click on "Problem Reports and Solutions".

2.JPG

3. Click "See Problems to Check" on the left hand pane. (N.B. Your window will not look exactely the same as mine)

3.JPG

4. Under Skype, click "More Details". I do not have Skype in my list, so substitute my Installer for your Skype.

4.JPG

5. Copy everything in the red box on MY screenshot and paste it into a reply to this thread. Alternatively you could make a screengrab of the whole window and reply with that instead.

How to take a screengrab: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/148532-how-use-snipping-tool-vista.html

5.JPG

6. Click "OK".

6.JPG

7. Check "Select All" and "Check again for solutions to other problems" then click "Check for Solutions". If any new solutions are found, particularly for Skype, open them up and see what they say.

7.JPG

8. Make sure you have the latest version of Skype installed.

Go here to download the latest version of Skype: Downloading Skype for Windows - Skype

With that seemingly pointless piece of text nonsence, we may be able to solve your problem!

Hope I can help you,

Richard

Hi Marv,

I believe that this issue is corrected in Skype Version 4.1 so can you please confirm for me that you have this installed. Here is the link: Downloading Skype for Windows - Skype

If you do have Skype 4.1 installed open up and log onto Skype then:

1. On the "Tools" menu, click "Options".

2. On the left pane, click "Video Settings" then "WebCam Settings"

3. Uncheck "Low light Boost" if it is checked.

This may help with general video on Skype, however if it does not fix the problem (and I really doubt it will), if you want to, you may re-check it.

There is however one more solution. However can I stress again that I believe this problem has been fixed in 4.1. This solution requires you to download the DirectX August 2009 SDK (or latest available) which is 553.3mb in size!

1. Download the DirectX SDK August 2009 (or latest available) from here: Download details: DirectX SDK - (August 2009)

2. Install the SDK with all features selected.

3. On the "Start Menu" click "All Programs" (See screenshot below)

8.JPG

4. Navigate to "Microsoft DirectX SDK (August 2009)" then "DirectX Utilities" (See screenshot below)

9.JPG

5. Click on "DirectX Control Panel"

10.JPG

6. On the "Direct3D 9" tab make sure "Use Retail Version of Direct3D 9" (not Debug) is selected and check the "Maximum Validation" check box. Make sure the "Break on D3D9 Error" is UNCHECKED!(See screenshot below)

I really hope this fixes your problem, if not post back.

Richard

Hi Richard....thanks for your thoughtful help. I do appreciate your assistance. But, I cannot commit 500+meg (2 hour download) for DirectX to fix this issue with Skype. Just not worth it. I have no great need for the newest Skype, an older version is working fine plus I have no problems with Yahoo video. I'm past this issue and thank you for your commitment to help me. Have a good week..............Marv
