Solved Unable to reinstall Quicktime

Hi,
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Quicktime was working perfectly until yesterday when I tried to install the newest version of iTunes but the installation failed (I received "Cannot Open Key:"error) When the iTunes installation failed, it took Quicktime with it. I navigated to the key in question and found 3 iterations of it. I set the permissions to full and tried again but every time as the program installation neared completion, I would see an icon for Data Execution Prevention appear in my system tray. I have tried to set the Quicktime installer to be ignored by DEP but no luck. I also get the "Windows Installer Stopped Working" Box some of the time and when I click on more details it seems to point to MSIEXEC.EXE. I have visited Apple's forums, COMPLETELY uninstalled Quicktime, iTunes, Bonjour, Apple Software Update and Apple Applicaton Support several times per their instructions in these articles : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926 with no luck. I would like to have both Quicktime and iTunes on my PC but if that is not possible, I need to get Quicktime back by itself as a program I use often (Starry Night Pro 6) and paid $150.00 for won't run without Quicktime 7.0 + (I was able to install Quicktime 6.5 successfully but Starry Night won't run with it). Please help as I have already spent about 10 hours working on this! I am unable to use System Restore to roll back to before I tried to install iTunes-there are about 20 restore points but they are all after I tried to install iTunes.
Any help would be greatly apprecited.
Thanks,
Charley

Hello,

I am Richard and I am going to help you try to fix your problems. I am not a specialist in this area, but I have worked on these issues before. My hope is we can at the very least improve your situation. I am working on another QuickTime/iTunes issue now, and we are on post 74, but we are making headway! I have never seen corruption as bad as his before, we have had at least 25-30 error messages to deal with one after the other.

iTunes requires QuickTime to function, however QuickTime can be run standalone. Therefore, you will never find an iTunes installer without QuickTime.

Step 1) Please download QuickTime ONLY from here (without iTunes) Apple - QuickTime - Download

Attempt to install it and tell me the error message you get. If you have already downloaded it, download it again. This is because if you don't know Apple, they make a new release, such as 9.1, and then they quietly make a second 9.1 release in a few days to fix all the bugs they had "forgotten about". Therefore we want the second version, newest release!

Step 2) When you uninstalled all this Apple software, did you use the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool. Do not rush into using this tool until instructed, as it is extremely powerful, and making a mistake could force you to clean install your Vista.

Step 3) Can you try to post the full error messages in future, rather than just snips of them. Thanks! Also, a screenshot is fine.

Tell me how this goes,

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply. About 2 hours after I entered my post I found a solution.
I downloaded Quicktime 7.3.1 as I know this versions was an earlier , stable version. (There were issues with a slightly later version than 7.3.1 with Starry Night and the folks at Starry Night advised their customers to roll back to 7.3.1 so I figured why not give it a try). Before installing 7.3.1 I turned off my firewall and anti-virus software, shut down Sidebar and shut down everything else I could.
7.3.1 sailed right through and installed perfectly. Everything is back the way it was before I tried to install iTunes. I had considered buying an iTouch but since I spent 11 hours of my weekend trying to recover from a messed up iTunes installation, that is not going to happen!

Thank you so much Richard for replying to my post. I appreciate it and wish you luck in solving the other issues you mentioned.

Take care.

Charley

Hello Charley,

Really glad you have managed to solve this issue. Shall I mark this as solved, or do you want help with iTunes?

Hi Richard,

Thanks! I guess you can mark this resolved as I have no intention of trying to install iTunes now. If I later decide to try to install iTunes and have issues, I guess I'll post again but right now it just isn't worth the effort.

Thanks again for everything.

Take care,

Charley
