Missing Codec on home premium/IE8

Hi all,
I am using home premium and IE8.
I have for nearly 2 years now had no problems with watching vids on win media player.
I have downloaded a "webinar" from a trading site...a vidoe file ending with .wmv
and when I click play the message box apears saying I have not got the correct codec to play this file!!!
I have downloaded freeware codecs such as FFDShow and AVI 6 but even after restarting it doesn't work.
Also after these were both installed the info at the bottom of the media player was all blurred as if done deliberately to stop reading of it.The "codec aquired" came up briefly in bottom left corner but when clicking play the same error box came up about a missing codec.
Any advice will be great on how I can find the right codec to play this file please.

Cheers,
Kevin

Did Uninstall anything? or Change anything? Because .WMV is a Windows File and the Codec should be there

You may want to check the File associations

see http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/233243-default-file-type-associations-restore.html?filter Settings For more Information

Hope This Helps,
Josh
