Solved Clipart C.D. problem

I have a C.D. with clipart on it, I bought it several years ago and frequently use it without any problems. Because it is in regular use I have always left it in the C.D. drawer at the end of my session. When I next turn on the computer everything functions okay.

Over the past few days when I start up the computer the vista program wants to copy all "photos" on the CD to a folder - I have changed the setting somehow can someone tell me how to stop this from happening?

Windows Vista Home Edition SP2.

Many thanks.

Follow these steps to specify what should happen when you insert different types of digital media into your computer.

  1. Open AutoPlay by clicking the Start button
    4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.png
, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking AutoPlay.
  2. Under Media, find the type of media that you want to change the AutoPlay setting for.
  3. Click the action that you want AutoPlay to take when you insert that type of media into your computer.
  4. Click Save.

You will find an option here called "Pictures", what does it say next to it?

Yes, thats normal. You mentioned earlier that "The Vista Program wants to copy all photos".

What program is this? Or is it just the autoplay menu?

I hope I'm correct here as I'm not too sure - I think it is Windows Live Photo Gallery that keeps trying to download the photos (clip art) from the CD. This is the same program that automatically downloads photos from my camera.

Firstly I would like to say thanks for the rep :)

Do you use the windows live photo gallery? Or did you just install it as part of the windows live package?

When I bought the computer from Dell the program was already installed as part of the package. I only use it because I do not know any other options and would worry that I would loose my photographs if I "mucked about" with it.

Right, Windows Live Photo Gallery is part of the Windows Live Package. Also in the package is software such as Windows Live Messenger (previously called MSN). These are optional extras for windows that manufacturers like to add in to make it easy.

I would like to say that it is only a preference to have Windows Live Photo Gallery installed because it isn't an essential part of Windows.

Would you feel comfortable uninstalling it? And on a more important note, Do you use any of the other Windows Live software? e.g. Windows Live Messenger

<<IMPORTANT>> If you do use any of the other Windows Live software, then DON'T follow the instructions below!

You don't have to if you don't want to, and if you are worried about your photos, then I would recommend that you should back them up to an external source and unplug that whilst you are uninstalling. The uninstallation process shouldn't remove your photos, but hey its always better to be safe than sorry. :)

Uninstalling this software should solve the problem, so here are instructions to remove the software (if you want to):
1. Open up the Start Menu
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Click on Programs
4. Click on Programs and Features

At this point it should give you a list of installed programs, scroll down to "Windows Live Essentials" and uninstall it.

Good morning I have just followed your instructions to remove Windows live photo gallery and I have now been left with Windows photo gallery. This seems less confusing for an old fart like me and I thank you for that bit of advice. I was getting angry as some of my "old" programs do not run in Vista and I am wanting to upgrade to Windows 7 as I believe Windows 7 should be able to run the programs Vista will nor run. Anyway warmest regards for all your help and patience.

So is the problem solved?

If you are applicable for the student discount, then I would recommend that you purchase a Windows 7 upgrade disc. It will cost you about £50 for the ultimate version from:

Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student Software UK Download | Software4Students.co.uk

This website is a licensed partner of microsoft and sells software at discounted prices for students. You are still applicable if you have children who are currently in school.

If you need help upgrading to Windows 7, then feel free to send me a PM, or just put another comment in this thread.

When purchasing an upgrade disc, check that your version of Vista will actually upgrade to another version of Windows 7:
