Yes, if you use one the chances are that it'll cause more problems than it solves, don't do it, Vista can take care of itself.

You're welcome, there are a couple out there that won't mess up the OS but you still have to make good backups of the registry just in case of issues and the gains don't outweigh the risks, best left well enough alone.

Also, the myth telling that cleaning the registry makes the computer faster has been debunked. If you want I can give you a link.

If I uninstall a program and think it left crap in the registry, I'll use the function in CCleaner. I back up the registry every day with ERUNT. The only other "optimization" I do is with a program by the author of ERUNT called NTREGOPT. All it does is copy the hives to new files, and sets it up so that the new files are used and the old ones deleted when you reboot. You are likely to notice smoother boots for the next few days(if you shut down and boot every day that is.)

It's about as safe an optimization as you can get. Even then I don't think I'd do it unless you have UPS to avoid power fail in the middle of it.

I would never use a reg. defrag or a reg cleaner....other than how I use CCleaner. Been using it for a few years and it's never caused a problem. It's not thorough, and it's never messed anything up for me. I'd never go any further than that. I just don't trust them, and there's really no need for it.

I use CCleaner and Glary Utilities and if I uninstall a program I use Revo Uninstaller. I also use a registry defragger. If it will compact more than 4% I seem to notice pages load faster. My friend never uses one he re-formats when his computer gets slow

I install and remove a lot of programs and think a defrag is good to close up the gaps Revo makes. If I didn't try so many programs then I wouldn't need to defrag as the gaps wouldn't be there.Files removed with CCleaner are temporary files and will be recreated when you run programs that need them and so won't be a problem if they are removed.Files removed with Revo are not temporary and will make gaps. No harm in closing the gaps.Registry cleaners are the thing to watch out for,They will do harm if not used with care.

Yes, if you use one the chances are that it'll cause more problems than it solves, don't do it, Vista can take care of itself.

Well, this dumb old woman did download, install, run and am now crying over it all...after using the MICROSOFT APPROVED Uniblue's Registry Booster, Tweaker. Talk about problems...

Now, is there a way to return to 'normal'?

Have emailed them for a refund, uninstalled the crap, and have gotten NO HELP whatsoever regarding solutions.:sa:

Can anyone here help? Thanks and God bless...:D

Hello Learner.

The odds are good that if you have a valid restore point that was created before you used the software it may restore the Windows registry to the way it was before your, shall we say, boo boo.
Have a look at the tutorial at the link below to see if it'll work; be sure to keep us informed.

Everyone has thier own personal experiances from reg cleaners. I do not use them. In test the difference is so small it is not worth your system health.

If you are that worried about speed then I would recommend learning about the registy and doing it manually, there are alot of keys in the registry that are left blank for a reason and when a cleaner comes along and deletes the empty key things go wrong.

It's still a bit slow, but will use CCleaner from now on and am going to d/l and install ERUNT.

Is there any way I can easily identify Windows & other program files that so that I could know NOT mess w/them?:)

Thanks again, very much for your help. xo to all.

I'm glad you got it sorted, thanks for the update; were I you I wouldn't use any of them, CCleaner is the best of them but it's not really needed, Vista can take care of its self.
