can someone suggest the BEST ripping software, I'm trying to rip some older DVD TV Shows and want to maintain the best quality I can. Speed isn't a factor.

something better than DVDShrink which is very outdated.

For the time being, DVDFab Passkey is in beta. I think it gives you 60 days but as new betas are released the time is extended. It has settings similar to DVDFab but you just drag & drop copy all the DVD folders from your optical drive to a folder on your HD. Couldn't get much simpler.

kwel yea i downloaded that handbrake but sadly it doesnt let you scan a dvd that has a restrictions. so im forced to buy one of those programs.

i thought there would be a simple and free way to backup your own DVD's. :cry::cry::cry:

i finally got the solution, best option. use DVD Shrink to make an ISO image of the DVD, and use the no compression feature. then use a program called FairUse Wizard 2 to take that ISO image and create an AVI. The takes about 30-1 hour but its actually what i want and lets me back up my dvds to half the size.

For "main movie" encodes with no subtitles to worry about, try AutoGK. Many times it will autocrop "letterboxed" 4x3 DVDs and produce a nice 16x9 .avi file. Also one pass mode at 92% quality or so usually looks excellent if the source quality is good. For the difference in quality, unless you are playing on a wall sized HDTV, it doesn't really justify 2 pass. You just end up with a bit bigger file. Say about 2 GB for a 2 hour movie. For a small increase in file size you get the encode done in half the time.

Often the 16x9 output of AutoGK plays better on my HDTV because the TV is in 16x9 mode compressing the image and making it look glossier.

edit: also for ripping DVDs that Shrink can't decode, try using RipIt4Me as I mentioned. Shrink will still work on DVDs that use the old encryption common when it was written. But newer DVDs can befuddle it.

You should rip the DVD to a VIDEO_TS folder. If you can't figure out which vob set is the main movie, then use Shrink to reauthor so there's only one vob set. Load the first .vob in the set and it will process the movie.

weird because i did re-author the movie, and picked only the MAIN title with the longest running time obviously and then after the folder is made is still contains one than one vob file, could it be because i selected "no compression in the tab so that dvd is not shrunk and i dont lose quality at the point of ripping the vob files

DVD titles greater than 1 GB have more than one file because back when they did the standard not everybody was running NTFS file system. That's why they have that numbering sequence.

Google DVD FAQ if you really want the nitty gritty. I don't want to try to nutshell lots of info into 2 paragraphs because then everyone will correct me with screen after screen of detailed techno trivia that's not important to the task at hand.
