transferring oe folders from vista to windows live

I recently installed Window 7 on my computer which was previously running Vista Ultimate. My email was OE. I copied all my user files to an external drive becuse of multiple errors trying to do the upgrade. Installation of Windows 7 went smoothly and windows live is installed and working properly picking up my former cable/dsl email account and using it as a default. The problem I'm having is that my folders that I used on OE and all my saved email is somewhere off in never never land. No matter what I try I cannot get those folders transferred to Windows Live.
Can some one please help? I have moderate computer skills so please try to keep it in layman's terms. Thanks

Did you format when you installed?

and

Did you do a custom install, clean or upgrade?

No I did not format the drive, but while I still had all my data I did clean disk and defragged. Also I did a custom install the upgrade would not work

Thanks Richard

I did find the windows.old files in fact I found windows.old,.000 thru .013 I used the windows live import function but no mail files were found. For me it's not such a big thing but the mrs wants her folders and saved emails.

It may take some time, but click on each of the files and look at the contents. I did not have that problem when I went to Windows 7 from Vista, but based upon what I read it should be there. Everything should be there except programs.

I do not think that the Windows Live import can work once it hits windows.old.

If you try and cannot find the files, hopefully, I will think of something else.

I have found this quote from our own Brink

If the messages are still in the Windows.old folder, they will be
located here inside of it:

C:\users\(your user name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

You will need to have "Show hidden files and folders" checked in Folder
Options to see the "AppData" folder.
