Vista DVD Maker

I'm running VHP 32 SP2 with all current updates on both my desktop and laptop.
Both have horsepower and disk space to spare. I can burn photo dvd's on both of them from the 'Burn' button in Windows Explorer. The laptop will burn a slideshow dvd from DVD Maker but the desktop will not. I get as far as adding the photos but when I click 'next' and go to the 'Ready To Burn Disk' screen, it just sits there with the little green 'busy' wheel rotating, seemingly forever. No error messages display.

I've visually compared the contents of each computer's Movie Maker and DVD Maker files and they seem to be identical. I've saved the laptop's MM file to a flash drive and tried to run the program from that after renaming the desktop file to 'old'. Same thing happens. I've Googled around and did the codec things, checked MM tools>compatibility and found no conflicting video filters. Everybody elses problems with DVD Maker seem to be related to incomplete or messed up burns. I've even searched the registries of each machine for 'DVD Maker' and near as I can tell, they're identical. I've also scanned with CCleaner, SpyBot and Avast with no problems reported.

The desktop has no other quirks, doesn't freeze or crash any other program. I have not activated Windows Media Player on either computer. I have QuickTime, MediaMonkey, Media Player Classic and Real Alternative installed. MediaMonkey is the default MP3 player and Media Player Classic is the default player for MP4 and .avi files on both computers and those programs work just fine. The two computers are not networked nor do I try to sync them.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated except the pulling out of hair. That option has been exhausted.
