Solved Cannot open a Word doc

I'm running Windows Vista, with Ofice 2007, with email in Outlook - no server. I receive resumes as attachments from numerous people. Most send their resume with a name such as, "John Doe.doc or docx", but I receive resumes attached that
are named "resume.doc". The attachments that are named "resume.doc",
I cannot open. It says:
"Cannot create file: resume.doc. Right-click folder you want to
create the file in, than click Properties on the shortcut menu to
check your permissions for the folder."

The same file can be opened up on another computer running XP. I've tried everything but I can't figure this out. This started about 3-4 months ago. I've tried:

  1. Saving doc to disk and renaming. Still won't open.
  2. Sending doc to myself from another computer. Still won't open
  3. Searching through register for "resume.doc." Can't find anything named that.
  4. Searching through "My Computer" for documents named "resume.doc." Found some and deleted them and emptied Trash.
What's happening?

Thanks Richc46, but this doesn't work. Firstly, there is no choice for "open with..." when I right-click. The only choices are "Preview, Open, Print, Save as, Copy, Select All".

Recently I've gone into the Temp folder and deleted everything and emptied the wastebasket. That didn't help either.

If this just started, I wonder if the docs are coming from Office 2010. It has happened in the past with Office2007 that people with earlier versions could not open from the current version.
Here was the work around at that time
Why can't people read my Office 2007 attachments? | Technology | guardian.co.uk

I have heard that this free program is compatible with Office 2010 attachments. You may want to make a system restore point (to remove it, if not liked) and give it a try

This problem may occur if the user’s Temporary Internet Files folder is full, or the user already have 99 same named file saved in there and it is not letting anymore to be saved up
1. Open Documents and Settings and find the appropriate user and expand the user’s folder, Expand Local Settings > Internet Temporary files
2. Do not delete the folders but rather Right Click and explore the folders within, then sort by date modified and delete the any files that are old or any files that you see had reached 99 in numbers.. as no more temporary files can be created after it reaches 99..

Ashvin, I’m a little confused. In Vista you reach the Temporary Internet Files by going to: C:\Users, USERNAME, AppData, Local, Microsoft, Windows, Temporary Internet Files. (Aren’t Documents and Settings, et al, folders in XP?)

And then, wouldn’t saved Word docs be in the Temp folder, not the Temporary Internet Files folder?

Hallelujah! Finally an answer. It's fixed. I had been told to put in %temp%, when I did that I didn't get any files that were named "resume." With your way of going into "Local", I found exactly 99 files named, "resume." I permanently deleted them all and now I can open resumes named "resume." Thank you so much.
