Solved Word Is Auto Changing Font While I Type..

Ok, I've been using word for a long time now and recently downloaded and installed a new font, unfortunately when i tried using this font to type in microsoft word the program automatically changed the font back to times new roman after about 5 lines. I changed the font back to the one i had chosen to use and it took about a line and a half for word to revert back to times new roman without my consent or permission.

Is there a reason this happening and if so what can i do to fix it?

The first question is whether the problem is with the new font app or MS Word. Why don't you try uninstalling the new font app and see if MS Word allows you to use any font you have in your system for as long as you wish to. If the problem disappears after the uninstallation, then you know it's the new font app, which may not be compatable with Word 2007, or with your 32 bit or 64 bit system, or you might merely have gotten a corrupted download, in which case a re-download might solve the problem.

If the problem persists after you uninstall the new font app, then it's a Word (or Office) problem, and you can start dealing with it, with at least that bit of knowledge.

Is it changing the font on the text you've already typed from the new font to TNR (so you need to go back and change the font on that text from TNR to the new font) or is it merely changing the font you use to type ongoing text and you need to change the font so you can continue using it to type?

Can you please provide the name of this new font (or font set or whatever) and the website you downloaded it from (the full URL link)?

Thanks!

I think the problem may be with the new font, I've tried typing in several other fonts and word doesn't auto change the font while I'm working with those. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the font, but word still shows the same error, I can highlight the text and change the font from the drop down menu but it kind of defeats the point of using it I think.

I'm also running a 32 bit system.

No, whatever text was previously entered remains in the runic font I'm trying to use, it just looks like word randomly picks a point and decides to change the font of the ongoing text back to TNR. Switching back to runic from the drop down menu doesn't fix the problem, it just lets me continue for a few more letters before reverting back to TNR again.

I don't have the URL for the download, I got the file from a friend awhile back and hadn't had any problems with it until recently. I had to reinstall windows on my laptop a few days ago, and after reinstalling the font, word started giving me issues.

Since reinstalling Vista, have you downloaded ALL the Vista and Office updates and service packs? If not, the solution may be contained in one of them and when everything has been installed, it may work as it did before. In any event, if you haven't done this you should do it anyway (even if we knew it would make no difference with this problem) because being current on updates is important (in some cases, critical) for your security as well as system and software functionality.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I sought help elsewhere, and received the following reply from Terry Farrell, MS Word MVP:

This is a classic symptom of a font with insufficient permissions embedded for it to work correctly in Word. Download the free Microsoft Open Type Font File Properties Extension Download details: Microsoft OpenType Font File Properties Extension and examine the full properties.

I don't know if this will help, but perhaps it's worth a try if you want to see if the font can be modified to work properly (assuming that's the problem and that this can fix it).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Thank you for the help and sorry about taking so long to get back on here. I think part of the problem was that the font file couldn't recognize or do anything with punctuation and certain letters. I downloaded a second rune font and this one works perfectly as long as i skip the punctuation.

I sought help elsewhere, and received the following reply from Terry Farrell, MS Word MVP:

I'm glad you found a partial solution to the problem with a different font. You may want to consider some of the above procedures with the new font to see if you can get punctuation to work as well - then again, perhaps if you're satisfied as is, it may be best to leave well enough alone.

It was my pleasure - I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help than I was, but happy to hear that things turned out to your satisfaction.

Thanks for the feedback and letting us know what happened. I will request that the thread be marked as solved.

Good luck and best wishes!
