Solved Fresh install from OEM disk?

Can it be done?

I have the original Vista 64 bit oem disk that came with my PC (no service packs on it) obviously I have the product key etc.

I put the disk in the machine and it said install! if i clicked on that would it give me the option to install on the drive of my choice?
would it delete over the current install of vista 64 or do I have to format the drive first?

is it that straight forward to do?

Just a bit worried that it will not see all my 4gig of ram without messing about.

I take it once it was installed it would auto update the service packs etc?

May have to do the above if I can! Never done a format/restore before so everything would be new to me.

Scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being hard, how hard is it to do?

Thanks

Ps: The only thing changed on my PC since new is the graphics card.

Thanks for that, I tried the install and this is what happened:

Things are going from bad to worse!!!

I put the oem vista 64 bit disk in and rebooted, selected the language etc and clicked install, it showed me my two drives which were marked up 0 and 1, as I only new them as C and E I didn't know which one was my C drive which had the current install of Vista on!! It gave me the option to format the drives so I did both, I then chose 0 drive for the new install, it said if anything was left on that drive it would be taken off...I clicked OK.

It ran through all the following:

Copying windows files (Finished OK)
Expanding files (Finished OK)
Installing files (Finished OK)
Installing updates (Finished OK)
It then came up with a black screen saying "Windows starting for the first time bla bla bla"
It rebooted and then went back to the screen showing all of the above.
Completing installation climbed up to about 85% and then it reboots and I get a blue screen with an error message "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer etc etc."

I have tried installing a few times but always get to the same point. I also tried the repair option it gave me but it found nothing! Tried installing on both the 0 and 1 drive to no avail.

All that's plugged into the PC is keyboard/mouse and screen....does it make any difference that the screen connection is hdmi?!?

I took some pictures of the message but my bloody phone will not connect to this xp PC...things just get worse!!!

Any ideas???

Someone on another forum said get windows 7 and that should install straight away without a problem...could that work? I don't want to spend a lot of money if it doesn't work.

PS: The PC was booting and running fine before the fresh Vista install, the only problem I had was trying to install a game.

Thanks

***ALL FIXED***

Thanks for all the replies guys/girls...you wouldn't beleive how simple the fix was!!!!

I'm using a full oem vista 64 bit disk and the 64 bit was the problem!!!! I had 4gig of ram in and thats why it was crashing!!!! As soon as I took a 2gig stick out leaving just 2gig in the install went in straight away

Good to hear it's all fixed. Just post back if it's not how you want it. Did you make a new partition and put the opperating system there.
I don't bother about that,if I need to reinstall I nuke and pave now much easier.
I just stick it on C
