windows live messenger has stopped working

hi,

i've had this problem for about 3 months now, and its getting rather frustrating!!!!

so,

when i load up windows live messenger, it comes up with this...

windows live messenger has stopped working
windows can check online for a solution to the problem

then i can either click on
-check online for a solution and close the program
OR
-close the program

when clicking on check online for a solution and close the program, it searches for about 5 seconds, then says 'the application failed to initialize properly (0x0000005). Click OK to terminate the application.

so i do so. Now it says...

-check online for a solution and restart the program
OR
-Restart the program

which ever one i click on it restarts and comes back to the initial error bar (check online for a solution and close the program, or close the program)

so i click close the program, and have to to so about 3 times for it to dissapear, nothing has changed, same happens again if i load it up again!

IM SURE YOU CAN SEE MY FRUSTRATION?!!?!?!? :confused: please please please help somebody?

Have you tried Uninstalling Windows Live Messenger?

Click Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a Program

In the Selection Box click Windows Live Essentials and click Uninstall this will bring up an Uninstall Wizard follow the Wizard until you get a choice of what programs to Uninstall check all the Boxes and Uninstall all of Windows Live Essentials

After that Install the Latest Windows Live Essnetials and see if your Problem Exists

Hi Josh,

I have tried this twice already before you suggested it and failed both times! :/ I have no idea what to do any more, thank you for you help though.

There is two things i'm not sure of in the programs and features window... 'Windows live sync' and 'windows live sync ActiveX control for remote connection' do these needed to be deleted at all?

I wouldn't Uninstall it if you use it

i have uninstalled live sync, and then reinstalled the new windows live messenger, still the same message appears, im beginning to think it may be something to do with some settings on my laptop? any ideas?

Hey, man since i installed new Win Live messenger bout 2weeks ago im gettin the same MSG then U... did u have found any solution 4that..??

To both jaycoco and branio29,

Did you upgrade to WLMessenger 2011 (if so, from what version) or was it newly installed? If you are using Windows Essentials programs, are they all from the same version or are they mixed and matched - if so, that could be the problem because some 2011 programs don't "play well" with prior versions of WL Mail and some other related programs.

Assuming the previously-suggested options didn't work (and, to be honest, they should have - so if you haven't tried them, please do so first), please try the following:

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run (this was reported as a fix for that specific error code). It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the sfcreport.txt report (you may need to copy it to your desktop before it will permit you to attach it) here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from elsewhere in the system or the installation disk (unless there are too many).

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

If that doesn't work, then please post any error messages from the Event Viewer concerning Windows Live Messenger (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer). Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm. Look in the Application section.

You may be infected with malware. Try to run anti-malware programs (in safe mode with networking if necessary). To fix this problem (if it is a problem) download, install, and run the following two programs: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html. You may also want to try the new, free Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Microsoft-Security-Essentials-Download-131683.html (with the caveat that only ONE AV program can be installed and running on your system at any one time). Use removal tools when appropriate http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2009/05/05/comprehensive-list-of-uninstallers-or-removal-tools-for-antivirus-software/. You may also want to try the free Avira at: http://www.free-av.com/ and Avast at: http://www.avast.com/index. Reboot after completing all the scans. You may also want to try the free OneCare at http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm and let it run all the options (except the registry cleaner) because that’s good maintenance (it will take some time to complete but can be done in the background).

If that doesn't work, try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

Boot into Safe mode with networking and see if the problem occurs there. Either result helps us narrow down the search for the cause.

Let's see what all that tells us before proceeding any further.

When I either cold or warm boot my desktop is takes approx 20 minutes for the windows updates to finish. Then, Windows Live Messenger, Please wait while Windows configures Windows Live messenger Gathering required information... and the status bar is 3/4 finished...for 24 hours so far. I am stalled out and cannot use desktop. Cannot uninstall WLM or any other programs because this program needs to finish installing. Please help. Dan
