office 2010 wont install and 2007 has been removed

hello, i recently had to do a system restore because my laptop went boom.
after that, office 2007 had gone. so i tried reinstalling the trial but its been replaced with 2010 so i downloaded 2010 only when trying to install i get

There was a problem setting up Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010:

This product requires Windows 7, Windows Vista SP1, or Windows XP SP3

i have vista home basic, no idea what SP im running but i guess its not SP1

anyway of getting around this OR is the 2007 trial anywhere?

First go to the computer icon on desktop
Right click and then properties
This will show SP etc.
If you have anything other than SP2 install all the SPs
Then try to reinstall
If you still have problems report back.
Office 2010 will run with SP2. It needs a minimum of SP1

Hi lordy5,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Richard provided the essentials above.

To get SP1, you can no longer use Windows Updates - it must be done separately as a stand-alone. Here is where to get it (along with some links that may help with installation questions): Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330). Ignore the part that says do not install it on a single computer - that is no longer applicable and this is the only way to install it now.

Incidentally, Vista only goes to SP2 (there is no SP3 for Vista - just for XP). So after you have manually installed SP1 and once you have installed all the other available service packs and updates through Windows Update or directly as needed, then reboot and try installing Office 2010 again and it should now work.

Office 2010 should install with SP2; Sp1 should not be required, regardless of the error message. Try with clean boot if necessary

Office 2010 is new. It certainly would not require SP1. And yes there is no SP3

Hi lordy5,

We are/were awaiting information of what version of Vista you have (as per Richard's instructions), but provided the procedures in any case.

If you have no SPs installed, you should first install SP1 and then whatever updates are available through Windows Updates before you install SP2 and then install all the remaining updates until you are current. You should not skip SP1 if you have no SPs installed and jump ahead to SP2. If you already have SP2 installed, of course you need not install SP1 (and probably should not and maybe even cannot install SP1 {I suspect you would get an error message saying a more recent version is already installed if you tried} - it's almost certainly already installed and even if not listed, it probably is, and in any event should not be required or installed if SP2 is successfully installed) and should follow Richards's advice about a clean boot as something else is quite possibly the problem.

I'm not sure why anyone interpreted what I originally said to imply SP1 should be installed if SP2 was already installed (as I just noted, I'm not sure it's even possible if SP2 is already installed), but that was not what I said nor what I meant. I presented it that way because since Office 2010 was not installing and it should work with only SP1 (and thus with SP2 which should already include SP1), and the error implied a problem with Service Packs, it seemed reasonable to assume SP1 was missing and therefore I provided instructions for SP1 since the normal Windows Update method no longer works for SP1 whereas it will work for the other updates and SP2 and I wanted to make sure you realized you needed to do it manually and where to get it if it was not there.

Once the SPs are installed, you should have no problem. Post back in the case that you do. You require at least SP1

thank you, cleared up 3gb altogether,

but the next problem

i go to run the service pack application that i downloaded, confirm that i allow it ect, then nothing happens. i haved tried "run as administrator"

any ideas?

A little late on responding to this question, but here are some other ways to get more space if you need it (and if you're that close, you may sooner than you think):

One very important thing to begin – do NOT use any Registry Cleaner or Registry Booster or Enhancer, or Repairer or Fixer software (or whatever it calls itself) no matter what it says (scans will tell you have thousands of errors just to get you to download and install the program or worse, buy it) or where you got it (even safe sites sell these products but they are not worth the headaches they can cause). Most do nothing of value and some can do great harm (to the point where you need to do a clean install to fix the problem – and that’s not even counting the fact that many such programs are actually malware in disguise). Vista keeps the registry clean on its own quite well and doesn’t need any help.

To improve your speed and space, do Disk Cleanup using: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html. Delete as much as you feel comfortable doing – nothing deleted there will harm your system in any way. This includes deleting the Temporary Internet Files. If you want to keep this from building, go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced and check the box Empty Temporary Internet Files Folder whenever browser is closed and then that folder will always stay empty (except when you're using the program).

Also do an Optimization: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Optimize-Windows-Vista-for-better-performance. Do all of the options (or at the very least, consider them - many can help a great deal).

Run CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ with as many options as you choose to delete (but be careful because this program if not used properly and with caution and with you paying attention to what you are doing can delete important and even critical files that could cause a great deal of trouble). Do NOT check any of the registry cleaning options.

Clearing out your temporary files can also save you much space and improve performance and while some of the above will clear a lot of the temp files, they won't cover them all. This will. It is TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and you should download and save it to your desktop. When run, it will close everything else, so be sure to save anything you're working on and basically close all your programs. If it asks (and when done even if it doesn't ask), reboot to complete the process.

System Restore can take up to 15% of your partition's space but that can be reduced. It's a trade-off. The less space you allocate, the fewer restore points you will be able to retain - but many people reduce this to save some space while leaving enough to save 3-4 restore points at least (which is usually enough - until you need them).
