File conversion error

Hi,
I saved my word on Microsoft word 2007 on .doc file but when I tried to open again later, a dialog showed up saying File conversion and underneath was a preview of symbols. When I clicked OK, I realised that the content is replaced my symbols and I can't get my work back.
Can anyone help me fixing this problem?

I have also attached the printscreen of the dialog. Hope it helps!

Hi & welcome to the Forum,

Looking at what you have posted & the conversion detail, I think it should be Book1.xls which is the default save name for Microsoft Excel.

Therefore, I think you are trying to open an excel file in word & that is why it will not convert. Try renaming it Book1.xls & opening it with Microsoft Excel & see what happens. OK?

I thought about that answer and deleted, to see if I could find something better.
Doc is not shown. We cannot associate it with Word.
Your assumption would be correct, but it appears it is not being opened with doc.

@richc46: That's okay. Thanks for contributing anyway. It's weird that it's not only this file, but it also happens to some of my other documents that I was working on and it's so frustrating because I don't have any backup ><

yeah I didn't put .doc when I was naming the document. I just wrote the file name on the box and clicked word 97-2003 document as file type. Am i suppose to put file types when naming a file?

If you saved in Word, it should have saved as a doc. But try that tutorial and make it open with Word.
You may have saved it as an Excel, as stated above, or with other software.

Did you save in a new Version of Word and trying to open with an old version
What is that 97-2003?

I have looked at the document & the errors are relating paragraph formating (See picture).

There does not appear to be anything to repair it, as yet. Sorry.

Do you have an earlier version of the document?

Programs & features.

Select Microsoft office & carry out a repair not an uninstall for now.

@richc46: I've tried the tutorial- well the second and third coz the first one didn't make any sense to me. no, it was the same version of word that I used which was word 2007. I have also tried to open it on openoffice write but it came out with the same result.

@Lottiemansion: no i do not have any early version of the document ;__;
ah, problem with going to the control panel and repair microsoft office is not possible because the laptop i'm using is my work laptop and restricted. My home laptop only has openoffice writer hence the reason why i'm using my work laptop. I even tried open it with open office writer but the result was the same

Well it looks like a support function callout to repair/ update the Office installation!

Has the file been on the network or just stored locally on your drive? Networks are often backup over night etc. so you could get a back-up from there?

Are you an administrator on your work laptop? If so you might be able to recover the file from a previously save state (Undelete a copy)?

Only issue would be installing the software to do it. Your support service should be able to advise you.

The rule of thumb with Word is a new editiion can open anything and older version may not be able to open a new version

@richc46- that's what I thought. that's why i saved it under an older version of word as it is accessible to any version.
@Lottiemansion: No, i saved it in my USB. and im not the admin. it was some guy from my mum's work so i can't ask him.

perhaps it's something to do with my USB. i mean, when i saved stuff in the laptop, it came out fine but the stuff i saved in my USB, some of them are corrupted so i'm wondering if there's something wrong with my USB. i did scan virus and nothing came up.

If you are in Word and you click save as, all you do is pick the name. The type of document is predetermined; usually Doc.
By the screenshot, either you are opening with the wrong software or you saved as wrong extension.

Hi,

Just a thought, the file coruption error is indicative of a "Fake" memory card (I bought one from E-bay) hence my post above.

The software will fill the card with temp files & check it's storage capacity for genuine as stated. Your files remain & assist to fill the card.

All you need to do is delete the test files once the capacity test completed, keeping your own files intact.
