Using a memory stick - help please

Member
I’m using one of those memory sticks, I download a few episodes of something to it and then plug it into my DVD player. It plays fine but the episodes are not in order. No matter how I rename them they’re always out of order. Does anyone have a solution for this?

What file format do you use please?
Do your file names start with numbers or words?
What make is your DVD player?
If you give me those details I will look into it for you.

Hi BlueDancer,

Are the episodes in ANY order? Is it always the same order if you remove and replace the drive or does it vary and seem to be somewhat random? The DVD player may not be using the name to establish the order. It may be using create date or modification date or something else. If the DVD order remains constant, check to see if you can get the order on the flash drive to match the DVD order using all available sort criteria. If you find one that matches up, then you probably discovered the method by which the DVD sorts and then you may be able to fix this problem by adjusting that information on the drive files (even if you need to make it wrong) to match the order you want (if it's possible to adjust the information by which it is sorting).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Episodes usually have titles (letters). No matter what order I put them in on computer. Plugged into DVD the episodes are out of order. I tried renaming them 01, 02, etc. but it didn't work. So instead of putting something on to simply play and relax to, I have to bring up the menue each time to choose the next eposode. This is the file type - VLC media file (avi)

I'm wondering if using a different media player would alter this result. Why don't you see what happens if you use the memory stick to play the files directly on your computer via on one or two different media players (i.e. Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, etc.) to see what the results would be.

Well I hope the answer is there because even though I checked the English button they managed to give me the French version and my French is really bad.
Will try again later, sorry medical appointment has to come first.

Hi MilesAhead, thanks for helping I've been away for a while.

Yes I wanted people to think before they did anything as people may have different ways to resolve things.
The final decision on what is done must be the computer owners.
I like to know how things work out after people use solutions they find here on the forum.

Try renaming them with short names like 001-and do about 10-15, 010-015
see if they stay in order.
As they will be made on the same day, the day the file was made will be covered as well.
They could be listed as date accessed, date created, file name, tags,
Still unable to get an English version of the help file so will have to convert from French to English. Will try to get it done later today.

Update. Still no luck. Gave in and put stuff on disc.

Don’t plan to keep ‘stuff’ and using memory stick was quicker apart from the problem of the order they were in.

Would still love to find a solution.

DVD is just new. Don’t want to buy another one.

Hi BlueDancer,

This is a different way to think about the problem and may provide a method to resolve it. Instead of trying to fix the sort order from the USB to the DVD player, why not first combine the episodes together in the order you want and into one big .avi file that cannot be re-sorted by the DVD since there's only one file.

Though a bit more trouble than just copying to a DVD or USB, if these are all .avi files, there is a way to join them together into one big .avi file that will be in the precise order you want and then copy that to a DVD or USB and you will have what you want with the episodes showing in the order they were copied (since it will be just one file and not many and thus cannot be re-sorted). Here's the procedure with a link to the free software you will need to do it: DivX Digest - Joining AVI files.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
