Word questions

We have word 2007 sp2 and it seems everytime a user opens a doc, it is searching for something from the old server that we had the templates on. This server is no longer available and it takes about 20 seconds to time out before it opens the file. It says in the lower left corner of the word window (the status bar I assume it is) that it is searching for this path from the old server, "Press esc to cancel...". If we press escape, it loads the document immediately.

I tried searching the registry for this old server setting thinking it was an old setting brought in from the old version of office xp we upgraded from, but I can't find it. So then I thought maybe it is stuck in the document itself, but all of our files that I look at do this behavior. Any suggestions as to how I can stop this from happening everytime we load a file?

My second question regarding word 2007 is why does use different file window handling from Excel 2007? If I oprn multiple word files, they are each in their own word window. If I open multiple excel files, each excel file has it's own window all contained within the Excel window.

Thanks.

Hi welcome to the forum.
I will attempt to answer you question the best I can. However it may not be the definitive answer/solution.

Your first question relating to Word 2007 dragging or hanging?
I am unsure if it is anything to do with your old server, but the fact that a server, hence templates involved may be a contributory factor to the problem.

Usually one can expect an extra time delay for opening of a document if re-calling from a template/
However, the delay of 20 seconds is maybe a bit much?
But my theory, right or wrong, is somehow connected with server/WorkGroup recall, and templates.
In the past Office has often ignored the changes and referred back to the UNC's.

Check Microsoft for Office 2007 Updates. See if that could make a difference. Check the re-call path.

Your second question re: Excel?

Hi.
I do get about the forum a little!
To your Excel queries?
I would say that whilst I've been using it for my own requirements, that has been my assumption, right or wrong.

I include below a number of links that should answer, between them, most queries regarding Excel.
I find them very useful and interesting! Here goes:-

Open Each Excel File in Its Own Window - Excel Help Forum
How to open a new instance of Excel 2007 workbooks
Open Excel Files in Separate Instances of Ms Excel: Find Excel Hints and Tips
BitterMinion » Excel Instance Launcher
And Finally.
How to manage multiple windows in Excel

You could always, double click the 1st file, hold the shift key, double click then double click the next Excel file.
See if that is in new window?

I have really enjoyed looking through my old files, and re-aquaint myself with Excel, which I have 't used for a good while.
Hope these help?
Happy reading.
