Many items in Startup menu

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum, and have looked at various discussions, but I can't see anything related to my question.

I run Vista Home Edition (32 bit) on a Dell Inspiron laptop, and starting-up seems to take a while - by comparison with my desktop which is a Dell running XP home edition.

When I looked in Systems Configuration>Startup, I see that there are 29 programs running, including all sorts of things I do not recognise (e.g. Cyberlink Pro, Nvidia HotK, and Ecenter). So my question is, can I disable these items without destroying my laptop? What programs are 'essential' in the Start up menu?

I'd be very grateful for any help or information on what one should reasonably have in this menu. Many thanks,

Les

This is what you do. Set up a clean boot
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
This will essentially prevent all non essential programs from loading during boot. The be sure to make sure that your fire wall and anti virus does load during boot. Now use the computer. Put the services back one by one. To see which are the actual problem programs. Once that is determined, you can ask us if it should be uninstalled.

When you say "by comparison" how much is a while? If the desktop takes 60 seconds and the laptop 90 seconds it could just be the HD is slower. If the laptop takes 2 minutes that's another story. Please give some times.

You can use this to get the boot time:

Contrary to popular belief, a bunch of apps in startup, unless they are big apps like MS Word or some spread sheet, don't really slow things down that much. My Vista64 was taking 2 minutes to boot. I cleaned all the startup stuff out and it only made about 2 seconds difference. The delay was waiting for drivers to load that no longer existing on the system(Norton AV drivers after Norton was removed.)

Also search on how to enable boot logging and where to find the boot log once it's enabled. That's where you can see the system waiting for drivers to load.
