Hello all,

I'm looking for a program/online tool that will encrypt my text. I would like to encrypt some text, send it to a friend and he can type in a password and it will decrypt it at the other end.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply Rich but I was looking for something that creates a cipher based on a password and my friend can type the password in a program at his end and it will decipher the text.

I thought thats what you wanted, but I think that software will cost.

I think Richard may be right. Specialist Software like that will cost, unless you know someone at GCHQ?

Hello Tom!

Encryption programs can be written in less than 100 lines of code, because one does not need to write the algorithms, only a few lines of initialisation around Microsoft Libraries.

You said that you wanted a password based one, rather than Public and Private key based encryption. Do you mind .net? It speeds up development of the initial proof of concept.

I shall post a first sample in about 20 minutes :)

I am always on the lookout for projects, and those which take a short amount of time are best. This is quick and sweet, and won't end up bogging me down with hours of "details"! It is good fun! UI already complete!

Proof of concept done! Tell me what needs changing. At the moment, I have taken some portions of the code from here: Encrypting and Decrypting a C# string | Martijn's C# Programming Blog

When I write the final version, I shall change most parts of that (in particular the MD5 bit, and up it to proper Triple DES) (ie most of it)

However, it is pretty good. Bare in mind that it probably won't be quite as secure as encrypting the text file using a 3rd Party Program, however, don't underestimate its strength. It would still be very, very hard to break. And hopefully you are not transmitting government secrets!

I shall improve on the UI as well, later. Comments and bug reports are very welcome :)

I just tried a port to C++, and got a few errors. In fact, my top error was this:

OMG! wincrypt.h is 19787 lines long! And .h files (header files) don't actually contain the main body of code! Only the names of all functions and variables etc. etc.) I dread to think how many lines of code there must be in wincrypt.lib, with all the bodies of code. There might be like 100,000!
