Side by side configuration on all applications

This is my first time posting on the vista forums. I have read some threads about people's problems with side by side configuration and have seen some people trying to help them. I was hoping to get some of the same advice from anyone and all who are willing to help.

I did not download anything or install any updates the night when my problems began. So I believe it is not my fault. I am not super tech savvy but have an idea how to navigate around the computer.

None of my programs will open without the error of
"c:\Program Files (x86)\Folder\Program.exe"

My Event Viewer says:
"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Windows\WindowsShell.Manifest".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Windows\WindowsShell.Manifest" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax."

Only thing I can use right now is internet explorer which does not even look 100% right. There is a gap of white space above my favorites and between where I type the URLs in.

Also as an added bonus, I cannot download anything from internet explorer. I've seen multiple threads listing which C++ updates to download in which order, etc. and none of the downloads begin.

Thank you anyone for your help in advance.
Shane

Thank you for your response.

It started some time last week, I believe Wednesday. It started when I started up my laptop, not while I was on it. I've been out of town and without my laptop since that time.

The anti-virus I use is the Norton Internet Security that comes with being a Comcast customer.

Thanks,
Shane

I did a restore from 10 days previous to the day it happened and I still have the issue.

I pay for Comcast and Norton comes with it for free.

Yes I've read this article before and it definitely is the most helpful one that I have seen.
I, however, do not have a binary/hex editor and I cannot follow the links to download one because no .exe will run (no downloads will start either obviously). I am thinking that even if I did have an editor to find which lines do not match up, I would not be able to download the C++ update that I need anyway :/

Thanks
Shane

I just deleted the manifest file that was coming up in the event viewer, and my computer is now lets me uninstall all the visual c++ updates and re-download them. Everything is working fine now, I'd even venture to say it is working better than before.
