Default Language Settings: Word 2003

Is there any way to PERMANENTLY set the Default Language Settings in Word 2003?

I have always had the Default Language in Word 2003 set to English (U.S.)
However, Word will automatically change languages if it perceives foreign-language words, names, or phrases within the text… Hispanic names in the document cause it to switch to Spanish as the language-default, certain cooking terms in recipes cause it to switch to French, etc. Then suddenly, all my English-language text is highlighted by Auto-Correct as being misspelled!!

I’ve reset the Default Language repeatedly, which triggers the pop-up statement “This change will affect all new documents based on NORMAL template.”

I’ve gone into TOOLS > LANGUAGE > SET LANGUAGE & made sure the “Detect language automatically” is checked. It was my understanding that this would cause Word to detect the primary/default language of text in a document even if it contained some words from another language;

And I’ve followed the Microsoft Support Troubleshooting instructions: Changes to default language settings are not retained in Word http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292106

But none of that helps. I still end up repeating the SET LANGUAGE process again & again. Aaargh!!

Is there a work-around that would resolve the language-switching mess once & for all?
Thanks!

Hi,

Not sure what or if this is your issue but Word documents come with the default language set.

Therefore if you open a document & the language is not your default it sets the language to one of the document but it will set any new documents to the one on your computer.

So when you edit the "Alternate" document & it is in the wrong language for you & you have to change it.

Do you understand?

Thanks for responding so quickly, but no, that’s not quite what my problem is about.
I know that Word documents come with the default language set,” as you said.
In my case, the default language is & always has been set to English (U.S.)

My problems occurs while working on a new or existing document of my own making (not imported from elsewhere,) so they are, without exception, in my default language.
If I then enter a Hispanic name or French cooking term, for example… the entire document’s language-default automatically switches to either Spanish or French.

I could see if Word’s auto-correct function merely highlighted those names/words as not being recognized, or if the language-switching occurred in documents originally composed on a different computer… but neither is the case.
