Side by side configuration error

I have just used the VAIO recovery tool and I am using windows vista..
I'm not sure why but when I try to open some programs it says this:
'The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.'
Could someone please help me to fix this?

I have tried sfc/scannow
It says...
verification scan 98% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations

Hello, unfortunately , you are the 3rd " side by side" person this week, this seems to be a tough one to " fix " The best and last resort after this one or two articles posting fixes for this issue was to just do a reinstall of the OS.
You say you used a recovery tool, was this from your console that came installed with your computer ? I am suggesting that you retry that tool, and lets hope it works this time, or you will have to do a back to factory default setting if your recovery tool has that for a last option fix. Post back results, there are tutorials here for a repair install if you have a dvd that came with computer . Let us know what you need to get it back up and running.
You could try the " scf /scannow " using command prompt , restart, run it again, then restart, If after the 3rd running of the SFC tool, if you still have not got it fixed , then the registry will have to be repaired by a reinstall . Post back your results.

The recovery tool used is the one that came from the console, I have 2 discs burned that can also be used for the recovery. However, when I put in the first disc, it doesn't prompt to use the second... so I'm not too sure how I would recover using the discs.

I've tried the sfc/scannow and it has still told me there are no problems, but the error is still there. I have also tried recovering to the factory settings (which is what I am using now) but the error has not be solved.

at the moment i don't have much on my computer, except for angry birds.. which does not work.. haha, what should I download to give you an idea on what programs don't work?

Well, from your last post , i take it that nothing will load for you, This side by side error is a registry issue and is hard to pinpoint the file that is corrupted or files, as it is usually more than one.
From those links i left , you see how tricky it is to repair, why most people just say heck with all this fixing it . and just do a clean reinstall and be done with it.

We have only one member, who is not been around recently, who is really proficient in this area. I suggest that you back up and reinstall. Back up your stuff and use Windows Easy Transfer to make the process as simple as possible.
