It shouldn't be happening. You'll have to analyse what it is that's causing it and see about fixing it. Hopefully someone else with more ideas will be along soon.

Apparently if you don't have .net 2.0 sp1 you can't install 3.5 or 4; which ever you are trying to install. You do need to have the service packs installed however you shouldn't have to have .net installed to do so however you might be having problems with windows update. Try to full download:

You must install SP 1 first.
About 3 weeks ago my computer failed to load at all, (Black Screen of Death), and after trying everything I couldn't get it to load, using recovery console I was able to get my data back so I have done a Factory Restore yesterday.
I have now not only been able to install Microsoft. NET 3.5 but also SP1 and SP2. So problem solved!!!
However I still have doubts about my hard drisk stability but that is for another thread.

Last resort , but , sometimes the only way , glad to hear you have succeeded in installing all updates.

Yarddog, he states he couldn't install it. .net 3.0 is already installed but needs to be turned on under 'Turn Windows Features On and Off' which you find when calling up Windows Updates/Installed Updates and look over at the left. Doing that may trigger the updates to 3.5 SP etc. etc.
I double checked this and yes "3.0 is installed out of the box. However old (& later) versions will still need to be
installed." is what I found.
Also as a previous poster states you may need to install .net 2.0 SP1 first.

Don't worry, I do it all the time, just happened not to in this case. ;-)
Apologies for my wording and subsequent misunderstanding.
I have managed to install Microsoft. NET 3.5 and Vista Service Packs 1 and 2.
Thanks to everyone for their help.

I was pretty sure I read it correctly. Glad you are solved.

My bad...maybe I need new glasses ;-) No harm done and glad things are OK.
