Solved Installing Microsoft.NET 3.5 problem

I have the problem of not being able to download Microsoft.NET 3.5 on my Vista Home Premium OS.

The following error occurs when I try to do so.

[12/10/11,23:58:53] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS): [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS). MSI returned error code 1
[12/10/11,23:58:55] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS) is not installed.

So following other advice, I tried using the sfc/ SCANNOW function (Run as administrator) and it always seems to fail at 99%.

The CBS log file is rather large, but these are the sections which contain "Cannot" - CBS Extract.txt below.

This has been frustrating me for some time, and I massively appreciate any help anyone is able to give, I am able new to this forum so if this is the wrong thread areas, please feel free to move.

Hello, you have no Service Packs installed ? Why not start getting your updates and as they install , you may find that you will be able to install the ones you cannnot install as most of them are depending on others to be installed .

Vista with no service packs isn't actually supported by Microsoft nor by most software makers now so take Yard Dog's advice and install your updates in the order they are presented. Set Windows Update to install updates 'for Windows and other products using Microsoft Update' and it will check for everything.

A hint on installing Service Packs. As they are large and sometimes difficult to install, temporarily disable your antivirus protection and set it not to reactivate on reboot as that often is the cause of failure. But don't forget to turn it back on afterwards once you are up to date.

Once you are up to par with SP2 then take a look here for something else that is useful: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/230249-sliptream-vista-sp2.html?ltr=S

Good question about the lack of service packs, the problem is that without .NET 3.5, i don't think it is possible to download the service pack, certainly it has never come up on Windows Update.

If it is possible to download and update to SP1 without .net 3.5, I will certainly try to do so.

So Currently when I go into Windows Update I get the following.

Security Update for Microsoft Vista (Kb979683) says successful and then retries every day.

and

Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86

Cheers for the replies and hopefully I can solve this.

Have you been using registry cleaners, optimizers, tune-up utilities? They are notorious for messing up systems almost as badly as a virus can.

Try uninstalling KB979683 as it may be corrupted and see if that fixes the retrying problem when a fresh copy is installed.

I believe to get .net 3.5 installed you first need .net 3 activated and that is built in to Windows, or at least it is on my Ultimate.

Go to 'Installed Updates' and look over at the left for 'Turn Windows Features On and Off' and look for the .net entry there.

You know that Microsoft provide free support for Windows Update issues? Support for Windows Vista technical problems and troubleshooting

I made a typo above .net 4 instead of .net 3, sorry. Altered it just now. Which prompts me to say that you may need several versions of .net installed depending on what software needs which version. I have several installed here.

I have tried manually installing .NET 3.5 and it always seems to fail with the following message.

[12/10/11,23:58:53] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS): [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS). MSI returned error code 1
[12/10/11,23:58:55] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS) is not installed.

Microsoft.NET versions 2.0 (with no SP) and 3.0 are on my machine.

I also tried to update to Vista SP1 and received the following error message, Error Code 0x800F0823.

Again thanks for the help above.

You could hide that update for now and use that link to contact Microsoft Support.

Alternatively try uninstalling all .net updates and start over.

I suspect that an update somewhere is corrupted which can happen for a number of reasons, infection, use of System Restore, use of registry cleaners or other meddling in the registry, etc. etc.

It may mean that you'll have to format and start all over again from point A. Let's hope not though.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if some update has got corrupted. I have reinstalled Windows Update a few time, and at least now there are only 2 updates, there used to be about 17.

The problem I keep finding is that I am going round in circles. I try to fix it, give up and then try again a few months later.

It shouldn't be happening. You'll have to analyse what it is that's causing it and see about fixing it. Hopefully someone else with more ideas will be along soon.

Apparently if you don't have .net 2.0 sp1 you can't install 3.5 or 4; which ever you are trying to install. You do need to have the service packs installed however you shouldn't have to have .net installed to do so however you might be having problems with windows update. Try to full download:

Download: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details
Download: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone (KB948465) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

You must install SP 1 first.

About 3 weeks ago my computer failed to load at all, (Black Screen of Death), and after trying everything I couldn't get it to load, using recovery console I was able to get my data back so I have done a Factory Restore yesterday.

I have now not only been able to install Microsoft. NET 3.5 but also SP1 and SP2. So problem solved!!!

However I still have doubts about my hard drisk stability but that is for another thread.

Yarddog, he states he couldn't install it. .net 3.0 is already installed but needs to be turned on under 'Turn Windows Features On and Off' which you find when calling up Windows Updates/Installed Updates and look over at the left. Doing that may trigger the updates to 3.5 SP etc. etc.

I double checked this and yes "3.0 is installed out of the box. However old (& later) versions will still need to be
installed." is what I found.

Also as a previous poster states you may need to install .net 2.0 SP1 first.
