VHS to DVD

I have a lot of VHS Tapes and was thinking of putting them onto DVD, there are free programs available for download which I will try first, any tips would be appreciated.

First; How to transfer from VHS tape to hard drive. I have Dell inspiron 530

Hey, thought i would throw a thought out at you, alot of peeps will use a combo vhs / dvd player or buy a dvd player and use it to copy the vhs . Just a matter of buying player/ cables and copying from one format to the other.

I had not thought of that, I have a DVD recorder/player and a VHS rec/play :D will check it out Thanks Yard Dog. and if that is successful I can edit on PC ??

Should be able to play on computer, might need codec 's updated . But, yeah, digital is the way to go, as the tape players will become obsolete in a few years, if not already, re: 8 tracks . who has those anymore ?

I would search on video/encoding/recording oriented sites before spending money. If the tapes are your home recordings then you may not have issues. But if they are purchased commercial movies you may find they employ methods to produce distorted video when recorded on another device.

I would read the rules/FAQ on any such video sites before asking questions. Usually if you're not allowed to mention certain software or subject matter it will be spelled out in the rules.

I've never transferred VHS to DVD. I would ask people with hands on experience. That's one reason I recommended video/multimedia specific sites as you'll get a concentration of people who have done it. Also I looked for rules outlining what could be posted and what not in this area. I didn't see anything specific. But I'm assuming it's because the subject doesn't come up much as these are OS forums. (Also there could be rules posted but my search just didn't pick them up.) It's probably a topic better discussed on sites where the ground rules are laid out in plain language. Then people responding know where to draw the line.

If you copy the VHS to DVD with a player\recorder, then it will probably be in DVD-VR format. You can edit that in Nero and most other similar software. You might have to pay for it.

You can download the trial version of nero 11 at nero.com. It is only good for 15 days.

If you copy one of your VHS tapes to DVD, open Nero Video\Make Movie and import the disc. You can edit and save either as a file in numerous formats (except mpeg-4, AVCHD or Blu-ray) or burn it as DVD-Video.
