Cannot update Skype

Unable to install the latest Skype, I installed version 4. That works well. But when I try to update it, I get the following exciting message -

"The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\programdata\skype\apps\login\
languages\ca.js "
End quote

Has anyone a fix for this. The laptop is a friends and it is running Vista Home Premium.

Hello ripsnort and welcome to the forums

Try this:

Command Prompt

  1. Open your start menu and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    takeown /f C:\programdata\skype\apps\login\languages\ca.js

    icacls C:\programdata\skype\apps\login\languages\ca.js /grant Administrators:F

  4. Now try installing Skype.

Man, I was hoping your fix would have done the trick. I'm still after having followed your directions Tom, getting the same message regarding the Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file.
If you've something else to offer, please fire away. Thanks!

Hi ripsnort,

It's great that you've found a workaround :)

If you want to fix your issue, I believe I've found the solution. Repeat the above instructions to launch an elevated command prompt, and use this command:

takeown /f C:\programdata\skype\apps\login

Then use this command:

del /f /q C:\programdata\skype\apps\login

Then uninstall Skype.

I, wrongly, thought this was a permissions issue on the file when in fact, it's an issue with the folder.

But if you're happy with the portable version, then feel free to stick with that - whatever works best for you :)

Tom, thanks for the advice. I've given the gal back her laptop with the portable version of Skype on it. I am though, going to copy your instructions should something flip off the rails down the road.

What's the difference between the portable version and what you're telling me to do?

Appreciate your excellent help. Thanks again Tom!!!

Portable software doesn't need to be installed in order to function. It has been packaged to contain all of the files it needs in a folder, that way you can have this program saved to a flash drive or something and you are able to run it on whatever computer you are on. I've got a flash drive of lots of portable apps which I use if something goes wrong with my PC :)

Also, you don't need to be an administrator to run portable apps as they don't need installing. So regular users can run them, and so can accounts with parental controls.

No problem :) Glad I could help!

This portable software is a newbie to me. Maybe that's why when I put it on the gal's Laptop, there was nothing to be found in the Start Button. I had to go to the directory and pin it to the Start.

I kind of wish I had the Laptop still about - I would have used your instructions just to see it work. But as stated, I'll keep this material for a later use if I should need it. Thanks again Tom!!!
