AVI incorrect AR in WMP

Backing up movies onto my hard drive, I've noticed some of my .avi output files play with an incorrect aspect ratio on Windows Media Player. Playing them on the DivX player on the other hand, the aspect ratio appears fine and exactly as how it should be. As I play them on Windows Media Player, two of my avi videos appear flattened from top to bottom (stretched from side to side); one of my avi files appears flattened side to side. Attached are screen-shots of the discrepancies. Any help on rectifying these issues is greatly appreciated.

Hi roninwofl1981, welcome to the forums.

If you could get some proper images, it would help alot, but its not necessary.

Do you have the latest WMP codec?

DivX Plus Codec Pack

I thought I posted them; basically print-screened, then copy-n'-paste onto the text field of the post directly, but I see that didn't work. Anyways, the png files should be attached (I hope).
Anyways, I would imagine that I would have the lastest codec as DivX updated 2 weeks ago. Independence Day and Mulan were ripped around July of last year (2011), and yet you can see the flattening of the screens. I'm assuming the link posted was for me to try at this moment. I'll give that a try, but please provide some feedback on this particular response.

I don't trust VLC at all. I've seen a good number of avi files crashing VLC but they played perfectly on WMP (despite stubborn refusal of others willing to try WMP).

It seems to me that you can adjust the ratio in WMP by right clicking on the playing video and something under Image Size or one of those aspect terms...

Unfortunately, that does not at all work. When I right-clicked on the video screen, this is all I see:

-Show Window
--------------
Video Size > Fit Video to Player on Resize
Fit Player to Video on Start
----------------------------
[] 50%
[] 100%
[] 200%
Full Screen [Alt + Enter]

When I select either 100 or 200 percent, I see no difference. 50 percent will shrink the video altogether. Full Screen will blow up the picture, but will have the same relative dimensions.

Eh, just an idea.. I use QuickTime which works for me just fine.. I just read about this problem some more and it appears people who like to use Windows Media Player find a friend in K-Lite with this problem.

However there is a troubleshoot option... If you open WMP and right click on the top toolbar this time, click "Options" > hit the "Devices" tab > then select "Display" and click properties, you can adjust the aspect ratio to your liking. Not sure of it's effectiveness because it's a case by case thing.
