Solved Windows Media Center crashes

typo

Banned
After 5 years of absolutely flawless performance, my Vista Home Premium MCE starts crashing within half hour of TV live or recorded viewing. It seems only viewing causes the crashing. Recording TV shows is intact, no problem.

I don't know if the plug-in TV tuner- which gets very hot- has any causal effect.

Help!

Hello Typo,

I would suggest you to try the following steps:

Step 1: Look for the error details in event logs
-- Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.
-- If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
-- Click an event log (windows media center crash) in the left pane.
-- Double-click the event to view the details of the event.

Step 2: Put the computer in clean boot and then try to open windows media center. If everything works fine after a clean boot, you can infer that some third party services are causing the problem.

In case it doesn't works, refer the following articles and try the steps mentioned:
-- My windows media center crashes whenever I tried to watch TV.
-- Microsoft KB Article: 974912.

Please write back with results, would be glad to assist you further.

Thanks Allan....the user with MCE problems you responded to a few years ago had exactly the same probs I have now... including disappearing Restore Points in SR.

In hindsight, I realize my probs started when I used a replacement tv express card thinking the old one was no longer working(turned out, what I needed was a new antenna).

So...now after clean boot, the problem with MCE crashing seems resolved suggesting conflict with other program/service. My next problem is how to figure out which service is conflicting.

MSN has e-mailed me the hotfix...but I decided to wait until I hear from you about it.

BTW, I could not find MCE crashing in event viewer.

Through tedious msconfig services checking and unchecking and several reboots, I found the culprit: Com4QLBEX.

Dunno what it is and I cannot locate it in my system. But with it disabled and no longer running, I am back to normal... so far. No more MCE crashing and Restore Point auto-deletion.

Thanks a ton, Allan.
