Try this, but first uninstall all of your old codecs 1st -

codec cleaner : http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=460&s=268

new codec pack : Here

My Computer

ok will i thank you for the info but i didn't see anything about code cleaner on the site? as for
the new code pack after downloading it when trying to run it i just get ( unspecified error ) ?
but i did find that i can play mpeg and some others . so it just has to do with (avi) .i tryed uninstalling divx and reinstalling it but no go.
also (avi)'s played fine when i used the 32bit vista

I have installed the vista codec packages and can watch avi files in media center but now everytime i try to do anything in dvd maker or video maker they crash. posts on other forums have suggested that this is do to the codec package. I uninstalled the codec package i was able to use video maker again. Is there any way i can have both?

I assume you have the COM error, its caused by either Nero 7.7 or the FFD Show codec.

Uninstall your codecs and start again, use codec cleaner then install Vista Codec Pack and Vista x64 codec.
Try making media player 64 your default player otherwise, you have to click 'Programs\VistaCodecs\64bit Tools\Set Default Media Player' after installing the codec packs.
If you get the Com error when generating thumbnails try updating your ffs show codecs.
Media usees either 32 bit or 64 bit codecs and the player, whichever you have as the default, you need 64bit codec for the 64but player

If this doesnt work try the

Thank you so much for the post. it worked for me.

Here are some Monkey-see-Monkey-do instructions that I followed:
I removed all the codec using the "Programs and Features" applet in my control panel.
Then I downloaded the "codec cleaner". I unzipped it, opened it and clicked the "Run" button.
Final step, I downloaded and installed the "new codec pac".
That's it.

Now I enjoy my WMC.

I generally recommend NOT to install mega codec packs...you don;t need all of them you only need the one for that particular file...and even then I recommend converting the video file to something that doesn;t need to install a codec.

In your case you have so many codecs installed it confuses things and you'll get conflicts.

I hope your codec installer allows you to uncheck/uninstall the codec you don;t need.

Hey guys -
I think this problem is much simpler than you're making it out to be (even with the 3 step process earlier in the thread). I realize I'm a little late to the discussion, but if anyone is going nuts over this still, here's a much easier and simpler explanation and fix. Definitely throw out all the codec programs you have installed (worst case, get that codec cleaner, but most codec programs have an uninstall). Step 2 - download a 64 codec program (again, I'm almost with you guys - and btw, ffdshow now has a 64 bit experimental codec program that works great... i have it as my SOLE codec program). Step 3 - DISABLE 'download codecs automatically' from the (tools-> options) menu in windows media player. Done. Finished. And step 3 is critical - I tried playing videos from step 2 to no avail, I did step 3 and they work like a charm. Hope that helps!!!

My Computer

As I replied to you in another post, I have the VCP by shark007, and the x64 components, and WiMP is set to download automatically - and I watched 3 hours of DivX encoded anime today alone.

I've tried all the steps listed above and I still cannot view .avi videos. I can hear the audio with WMP11 or VLC, but no video.

I've tried VistaCodecs with x64, the K-lite x64 pack, the VideoLAN VLC program, and even a few Vista 32 bit codec packs, but nothing worked. I made sure to uninstall each codec pack and run the cleaner program before each new install. I even ran registry cleaners and rebooted before each install, but still can't get .avi to display.

I've got the latest drivers for my video and soundcard and the latest firmware for the mobo.

Any other ideas?

My Computer

Are you sure you are running the 64 bit version of WMP, keep in mind both are installed with x64.

Just another point I'd like to make about "AVI" files as most people seem a little confused about it. AVI files are NOT a format, they are a container. An AVI file could contain different audio and video formats. For example one AVI file the video could be encoded in Dixv with audio in mp3 format. Another video could have the video in Intel Indeo and the audio in AC3, etc. So when an "AVI" file is not playing properly you'll need to narrow down which codec you are missing.

There is an application called GSpot that will help you with this.
GSpot Codec Information Appliance

My Computer

Yes, I'm sure. I was eventually able to sort it out by installing an old Indeo codec that could play IV50 files with WMP11. Can't get them to play with VLC though.
