Ok, so when Vista first came out I found out that you couldnt record any direct sound like you can in XP. I was just wondering if there was been any fixes/work-arounds out recently?

Have a simular issue. I really need to record via my PC. Have Realtek HD but no recordability and no idea why. Vista help shows me how but I get a message saying I don't have a recording device. Any help is appreciated.

as far as i know microsoft removed the record direct sound ability in vista for copyright purposes. I just thought maybe someone has created a 'work around'

Hiya Rud. I'm not quite sure if that is the case because all the necessary help files are in place and my PC is a new build. I can't understand why Microsoft would do that when you consider how many users require the facility for recording their own music or even voice overs for their video productions and presentations. I was thinking on the lines that it may be an issue with the Realtek HD Audio card not having the software or the built in ability. I have a Soundblaster Audigy in my old PC (XP S2), which came with excellent capabilities for recording, either by line in, WAV/MP3 (simultanious play & record) or even "What you hear." I am tempted to put the Audigy into this new PC but have huge concerns about its compatability - I've read many many horror stories about Creative & Vista. Well, if you do find any news on a work 'round please don't hesitate to post it here.

Thank you!

From what I have read Vista has indeed removed the capacity to record "what you hear". It has something to do with Vista drivers for most sound (inc Realtek onboard sound) and it has to do with copyright issues.

Which I think is fair enough in a way.

The only work around I have read about but have not tried is to run a cable from your headphone socket to your line-in.

I would have thought there would be some internal feed back loop happening if one tried that but it's worth a go.

Audacity on Vista doesn't have "what you hear" anymore either.

I am using Total Recorder and I am managing to get an audio stream from internet radio, but the recording level is very low.

Does anyone else use total Recorder with Vista x64 and have any tips?

thanks,

Colin
