USB and vista sound driver conflict

I have just started using Vista premium on a new toshiba satellite laptop with a realtek sound card. Im using a line 6 toneport USB interface and Gearbox software for playing guitar.
the problem Im having is my windows media player and winamp player will not work when the USB cable is plugged in. I need to find a way to get my audio to use the USB Gearbox software as I like listening to both tunes and playing guitar at the same time with my headphones so I can practice new songs.
with windows xp I used to just set the default sound driver to whatever I wanted to use. But in Vista I'm lost....I dont want to disable the realtek either.
so I have to unplug the USB cable to listen to my mp3 tunes
I would like to run the mp3 players using the gearbox software ASIO drivers instead
anyone know how to remedy this???
Are the new realtek drivers a fix for this or???
