Microphone not working with Vista Ultimate

I have used two different microphones on my other machines and they work, but they do not work with my Vista Ultimate computer. I use them for in-game teamspeak (not through Ventrilo, just basic game teamspeak) for games like DoD:S and BF2. The ingame icon shows me speaking, but no sound comes out. My system is as follows:

Intel Core2 Quad Extreme 4 processor CPU
Vista Ultimate, 32bit
Velocity Micro Manufacturer
Nvidia GEForce 8800 gts graphics
SB X-Fi Extreme Audio card (the jacks are in back of machine for the sound card, even though front jacks also work for headsets)
EVGA Mainboard nForce 680i SLI 122-CK-Nf68 Motherboard

I have the jack connector headsets with with the green and pink plug in leads. I have tried everything I know to do and cannot get it to work. :( Woud a USB mic/headset solve this?

Hi Colter! Welcome to the Forum! :)
Does your Mainboard have built in audio? If so you might need to disable this in the mainboard BIOS so the end result would be that Vista knows your SBX-Fi Audio Card is the default sound card and I'm thinking it will then see your mic like you want.

Hi Colter!

I had a similar problem with my Microphone in Vista Ultimate. My problem proved to be not a microphone issue but a sound card software/driver issue.

Let me be more specific... I thought that my mic didnt worked cause I heard no sound after recording but the real problem was that my mic recording level was too low. Even after setting the level to 100 I had the same problem.

For some reason the Mic boost for my soundcard is disabled in Vista settings (I am using an Audigy SE) resulting microphone volume to be extremely low. Even today I haven't found a way to enable my mic boost for my Audigy in Vista (in Windows XP it works fine) I assume its a driver issue. I was forced to use my onboard sound card (which supports mic boost) as a recording device. Now I am thinking to get rid of my audigy sound card :)

Even on the Prelude, the mic is very low levels. I have reported this to Auzentech and they are aware of the issue and will try to fix it with later driver updates. Until then....
Creative drivers...suck.
