Hi. This is a pain to do, but follow to get up and running:

The DSP codec can be installed on Vista using the following procedure:
1. Acquire tssoft32.acm and tsd32.dll at
Codec-Download.com - Downloads
The Download link is half way down the page.
2. Open the Windows\System32 directory
3. If tssoft32.acm is present, rename it tssoft32_old.acm. Either way, proceed to the next step
4. Place tssoft32.acm and tsd32.dll into the Windows\System32 directory
5. Create the following registry entry:
a. Folder (you may need to create some of these folders: KEY_CURRENT_CONFIG>Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.trspch
b. Set REG_SZ value to: tssoft32.acm
c. No need to reboot, just close regedit
6. You can verify that the codec installed correctly by going to WMP 11\Help and clicking on “Technical Support Information”. A webpage will open listing all the codecs installed. If tssoft32.acm is listed, you’re set!

2. Click Here to Download tssoft32.acm save in C:/Windows/System32 folder

3. In Control Panel, go to Add Hardware.

4. Click Next and after it searches choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware Click Next.

5. Scroll down to the bottom of the Installed harware list and choose Add a new hardware device Click Next.

6. Choose Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced) Click Next.

7. Choose Sound, video and game controllers from the Common hardware types list. Click Next.

8. Click on the Have Disk button.

9. Click Browse

10. Navigate to the C:/Windows/System32 folder

11. Choose $winnt$.inf Click Ok. (if you cant find that file try mmdriver.inf )

12. Click Continue Anyway if you get a warning box.

13. Select DSP Group TrueSpeech Audio CODEC from the list. Click Next.

Thanx coolchris..
IT works like a charm!

EDIT: This IS the ONLY workaround that I could find throughout the net for this problem! And this codec is used by various types of medical transcription software..

I found this post on Yahoo Answers....it was a couple of clicks, and it works!

"I recently upgraded to Vista and was running into the same roadblocks. Luckily I stumbled across Bytescribe's FAQ page, which has a link to an installer that takes care of the codec installation for you quickly and easily.

The FAQ page is at http://www.bytescribe.com/support/vista.... , and you'll want to look under "Product Compatability List" in the section that mentions something called "Export Utility". There is a link there to a TrueSpeech Codec Installer .exe file on bytescribe.com's site itself that I have confirmed is a safe link.

The installer is located here: http://www.bytescribe.com/downloads/tsp_... . Download the .exe, run it, restart Yahoo Messenger, and you should be all set."

Hi Chris,

I've been trying your method from Feb1 that you posted to download the DSP Group TrueSpeech™ Audio codec, but I have neither $winnt$.inf nor mmdriver.inf in my System32 folder. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks for your help!

I'm using a Gateway laptop using Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I thank everyone for their previous responses but they simply did not work for me (probably because I didn't have a full understanding of each step). I reached certain points in the instructions where I couldn't locate the files being referenced (i.e., $winnt$.inf and mmdriver.inf), etc., so I couldn't follow the steps through to resolution.

After hours of trying to resolve an annoying issue with not being able to listen to my VOIP messages from work, I was able to finally listen to my voicemails with one simple solution. I visited Free file hosting by Savefile.com and downloaded an .exe application which installed the necessary drivers for me. I then restarted my laptop and, voila, the voicemails played just fine on Windows Media Player.

(Geloe777 on where to get DSP True Speech Audio CODEC? provided this solution on 27 Jul 2007. I hope it works for you!!!)

Hey yac2x,

This was "normal" for me and caused a lot of frustration! I could not locate the .inf files they listed above. I think it has something to do with our version of Windows Vista, but I really don't know for sure.

I suggest you save yourself some trouble and simply try downloading TrueSpeech.zip from Free file hosting by Savefile.com. Once you extract the zip file, you should be able to install the .exe application, restart your computer, and that should be all that is needed. I was not required to follow any "complicated" System32 folder steps like those listed above. I simply downloaded and installed the file and it took care of the rest by itself.

Good luck!

My Computer

I have Windows Vista Home Prem 32bit and done all the steps that you have.
Opened up WMP11 and the DSP shows up in the codecs.
I went to control panel, Add New Hardware, Install Manually, Sound And Game Controllers, Have disk, opened up System32 and the only inf file that's shown is ieuinit.inf, there are none of files shown in that folder.
