I built my computer here about 1 month ago. About one week after completing it the sound stoppped working in web browser streams, music and video alike. I have searched for a solution but the only one I have found is REFORMAT, which I want to avoid as long as possible. Recently I played sound through both quicktime and Media player on websites but no luck with flash. I have reinstalled adobe flash but no luck. Any solutions? I would really appreciate your help.
I have windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Well done on the whole building of a computer! :)
when you click on your speaker on the taskbar, look at mixer, different options on there, make sure all volumes turned up if possible. id presume its not a problem with the speakers/leads. how do you connect output sound devices to the computer. if its pci slot, make sure it is stable, and properly connected, or if its on the MB, make sure it is fully working. Does device manager show any problems with sound devices?

Cheers. Thanks for the reply. It's funny that because the Mixer doesn't show any applications to do with my web browser...( It shows Speakers, Windows Sounds, The Witcher(playing the game at the moment), and Windows Live Messenger. I have both internet explorer and Mozilla Firefox running. Just to tell you my audio work in EVERYTHING except web browsers.
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe MotherBoard, onboard 8-channel audio. I connect through the front ports.

Strange, Try tool, and make sure all add-ons are enabled, try using the back speaker ports, and i dont mean to insult you, but make sure its in the speaker, and not the microphone. that was once my problem!
Never used Firefox in-depth, so cant suggest anything there
Good Luck!

Hello again, I looked for flash player in add ons and it wasn't there. Tried reinstalling/ installing older versios to no avail. Tried back ports as well with no luck. When I use firefox -after uninstalling flash player- it prompted me to install it so I try but it does not install, it prompts me that it has failed and the only option I can select is "Manual Install". This leads to the website where I download and install without an error but still no sound in web browsers!!

My Computer

it's not the players it's the browsers...

Prepare some sound files to play and a video file

completely uninstall all browsers.

Do a system sound check using the files you prepared above...

Once you have confirmed sound is running normally. Install browsers....accept all defaults.

Same problem but now with a twist. Had the sysytem checked out where i bought. Audio checked out except on Internet. They sugested I reload the browser(Explorer 7) , "don`t know how" that is a quote from Microsoft tech people. Just before they asked me for $50. I declined the help and kept messing with it. Now sound works with Yahoo radio I can listen to (Ashley Simpsons get out of head) but not Reuters or CNN or (CNBC sound sometimes as if stream is being held back) or CBS(no sound at all) nor PBS. From what I can tell at Reuters they offered a plug in from Adobe flash tried but still does not work. And read that Adobe does not work with Vista. So if anybody out there knows please post so I can listen to the talking heads on video stream. I don't think its the Internet connection because the Mac has no problems.

My Computer

Adobe Flash works with Vista, both 32bit OS and 64 bit OS (32bit flash in a 32bit browser).

make sure you are using a 32bit browser (Firefox or else 32bit IE).

I'm having the same problem, sound works in pidgin, WMA11 (plays video and audio), etc etc, basically everywhere except for the browser.

but on browser, it doesn't work. I'm using Firefox 3.0.1 with adobe flash, shockwave flash v 9.0 r124.

Has anyone found a solution? This is really puzzling because it was working like 30 min ago.. now it's not, and I haven't restarted or fiddled with the flash settings at all...

another option is to uninstall the flash player and then download it using the stand-alone. For some reason it never installed right on my wifes laptop. However, once I downloaded the standalone and ran it as Admin, she never had any problems again.

Right after I posted it, I restarted firefox and sound came back like nothing happened. Thx for the reply though.

I have the same problem. The sound on my computer works fine with iTunes or WMP but not with Internet Explorer or Firefox. I've looked at a lot of forums with all kinds of possible solutions and tried them all. Nothing is working. I can't figure out how to get the sound back. I've messed with the registry files, downloaded a bunch of codecs, uninstalled and reinstalled flash player multiple times, and of course checked all the sound settings in the control panal. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

My Computer

I found the following in/on a yahoo "answers" forum.

The thing that worked for me to fix my inability to get any audio through my browsers (both IE and Firefox) was to do the thing where you go into :Services: and "restart" the audio service, even though the service appeared to be active.

I had a very similar experience on my desktop.

* Check all of your volumes with:

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices.

Push the advanced button.

* If this option is unavailable or your volumes are "okay",

Go to:

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services

Look for the Windows Audio Service.

If this service is stopped restart it and reboot.

This was my problem and it took me a week to figure it out. I never turned the service off.

Good luck.

I bookmarked the information in case it ever happens again.

My Computer

Well here we go.

I am having same problem in XP but I just can't hear video clips (youtube and so on) and these are the steps I have taken

1. Check Sound and Audio Devices
-these were fine as I can play movies, and songs, I can play online games with sound but just not youtube.

2. I have checked internet options under the advancesd tab to make sure that sound was checked under multimedia section.

3. I have factory reset my router as I was having late last year with internet sound and somehow this seemed to do something then. (I couldn't think of anything else t do)

4. I have uninstalled flash player and used Firefox to re-install it and I got Manual Install as well. Still didn't show up in add ons.

5. I uninstalled Firefox and re-installed and this has not worked.

6. Re-installed sound drivers for the mother board for fun.

7. Installed K-lite codec pack

I've done so much that i can't remember half of what I have done. Anyway. Any suggestions, oh I forgot. Re-formatted my computer as well.

Suggest away anyone, Throwing in the dump is an option.
