sound problem

Hello. Yeah, I'm new to Vista and I seem to have a small problem with audio. When I use programs such as sound recorders or capture cards, the audio doesn't record right. It records as if I were using a microphone. How could this be when there is no microphone plugged it? The weird part is that I can hear myself and other things in the background of the recordings. Is there a setting that would change it so that it records from the actual source?

It sounds to me like you're recording from your speakers. Why do I say that, you ask? Well, speakers and microphones are really basically the same thing: The are cones that vibrate. In a microphone's case, you talk and the cone vibrates, creating an electrical signal (you're a magenet around an inductor, or vice versa) that can be translated by your capture device. A speaker, for the most part, is the opposite.

This makes me think you may have set the source to your speakers or your audio out port. Without knowing what software you have, or the settings, or the specific thing you're trying to record, I can't do much more than suggest that you check the source you've got selected.

If you need more guidance than that, you'll have to give me a bit more. Screenshots of your set-up can be very helpful.

As you can see in my profile, I'm using Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I tried using Virtualdub to record using a capture card. It usb and it uses Line-in composite ports for video and audio. I'm trying to get the audio from that line(from tv-to-pc) but the pc records from somewhere else like a microphone. Same with a software called Absolute sound recorder. It records like a microphone and not from the PC itself.

It looks like the capture card may not have installed correctly. It should appear in the recording devices, I'd think. Can you see it in Device Manager? Are there Vista drivers available for the capture card?

I've never used a capture card, so I can't guarantee that it should be there. If not, though, it becomes a software setting.

Well, I thought it could be a compatibility problem because you see, I'm using Dazzle DVC 80 which is not compatible with Vista according to the site. I installed the drivers it came with. It didnt work with the software it came with but it captured with virtualdub. If the capture card wasn't compatible, it wouldn't have worked with virtualdub, right? But the sound issue was the only thing wrong so I thought it could be something wrong with my settings since absolute sound recorder does the same thing.

Hmm...well, if it works with virtualdub, you're right, that would imply that it is working. So, that would mean that it's an issue with the other software.

Still, I do find it baffling that the capture card doesn't appear in your Sound menus. USB devices like those can have a tendancy to wink in and out of existance on a computer. You may want to try pulling it and plugging it back in to see what your computer thinks the device is. If it doesn't seem right, we might have a bit of a clue there.

Well, I won't be home for a couple of hours but I'll try that later. I do know that when I plug it in, it makes a sound so it detects it in some way. I remember on XP, it had the little icon on the toolbar.
