Vista 32 popping sound

Hi all, I stumbled across your forum while trying to sort my damn comp before it goes out the window.

I work from home and usually listen to radio 1 via the internet.

Ever since I have installed Vista Ultimate 32bit I get a annoying popping sound while surfing the internet.

Pop up blocker is switched off!

I have attached a .wav file for you to have a gander at.

Any help much appreciated as its really doing my head in!

Thanks

Smokey

I recognize this sound, but I can't place where I've heard it before. I just spent some time listening to all the default Windows sounds, and there's no clue there.

My guess is that it is related to a non-Microsoft pop-up blocker. Which browser are you using? Do you have any third-party toolbars installed?

My Computer

Thanks to windows Vista, every program now has its own volume control, even Web browsers and messengers! Simply click on the volume icon on the task bar and click on mixer. Then, in the new window, you can see which running programs have outputted sound from the moment they started. when the popping sound plays, it must come from one of these apps. Just drag down the volume for that app n u're done!

As for guessing what's making the sound, I think its Firefox blocking pop-ups, i guess

I have the same problem. Running IE. Media Player and anything I listen to over the internet pops when i open new pages or refresh old ones. I turned down the volume in Inernet Explorer but it didn't work.

Any other ideas would be apreciated

I am also having this same problem, and don't know what to do about it, my volume is on mute and I still can hear it though, does anyone have any ideas? I'm about to lose my mind.

Thank you

Does it also make the popping sound if you use headphones too.

I too am experiencing a randomly (apparently) timed popping sound. It does sound like the audio cue from a pop-up blocker (pretty sure ads-gone once used it), but it is different from the one provided in the .wav file at the beginning of this thread.

The question for me here is, "How can I determine the source of a sound?" Which application/process is sending or generating this to audio_out? Can a log for such things be generated?

I actually searched for all *wav and *mp3 files on my vista 64 pc and listed to the ones that were shorter than a few seconds. No luck. Browsed all the offerings in the Sounds section of the control panel as well. No match. I have to assume the sound data is generated on the fly by whatever app is the culprit here. I also tried keeping a record of the times the sound is heard and then cross referencing this list to event timestamps found in the event viewer. No joy.

Turns out, this is a great annoyance :-)

Can anyone assist with relief? Am I missing some gem in another forum? Searching for "popping" often yields other real issues related to playback quality, which is a seperate kettle of fish.

Many thanks in advance -

Perry
(Heard two "pop!" sounds while writing this

Have an HP 24" LCD monitor with the speakers turned "off" and am fresh out of good ideas.

I think most of these popping noises are most probably caused by a lack of electromagnetic shielding, Mansrm's answer is very close to the mark, these noises can be caused by any electrical devices a typical example that most people should know is caused by a Mobile Phone to close to the Hifi or PC

Various answers, would be to change the speakers, move the PC, try a different wall outlet or to shoot the hairdryer.
Turning down the sound will in most cases not work as the onboard speaker will also be affected.

For the rest, have you tried to scan for malware?
