Problem with Internal Microphone (it isn't working)

Hello First off, I apologize if this isn't considered to be in the correct forum or not. I wasn't too sure, because I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.

My internal microphone currently is not working. I receive sound perfectly fine from everything, but my internal microphone will not record it. I have spoken into it, created loud noises, and have done whatever else I can, and it still does not pick anything up. My settings are enabled, yes. I've been to onto the HP site and have gone through step-by-step instructions over various solutions that could fix this, but none of it seemed to have worked.

I've tried a numerous amount of times to use the sound recorder and play it back, and when I do the sound does not show up.

Has anyone had this problem before? If so, how did they fix it? Or does anyone know maybe what it could be and any other possible solutions available?

Some information that might possibly be able to help (I'm not sure if it will or not, but it can't hurt.):

I have:
a Compaq Presario F730US Notebook PC
Vista Home Premium

the product number is: GR967UA#ABA
and the serial number is: CNF7480N4C

the sound device I have is: Conexant High Definition Audio

Hello Dotaquote,

Check both the Speaker volume Microphone settings and the Microphone settings themself as there are a few settings found in each one that affect recording...Have you also contacted Compaq directly about this as they are more equipped to handle support requests for there hardware? They also provide a 24h live chat support service.

Re: Problem with Internal Microphone (it isn't working)

Yes, I did contact them and I was directed towards a support page that had possible solutions and step-by-step instructions on how to solve it. However, I had been to that page beforehand and did exactly everything it said more than once, several times, and still it did not help. I told the person that I was talking to that I had already been there, and their response was "Well, I suggest you try it again." So, that was absolutely no help!

I did, however, get an external microphone yesterday and I've tried it out and it works perfectly fine. So, at least I have that now.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to this topic, dmex. I appreciate it greatly!

Sounds like they are not doing there job...I would tell them that page doesnt have all the answeres and ask them for direct assistance.

If they try say goto that page ask to speak with a manager and explain you have been to the page many times and you would like to know why they will not help you directly.

There may be a setting in the audio settings that allows you to boost the mic. Go into control panel, audio settings. I had this problem on XP so I dont know if it is relevant here but you never know.

Re: Problem with Internal Microphone (it isn't working)

Ok, maybe someone here will know something I don't. I have a HP Pavillion DV9260NR notebook with x64, Conexant HD audio. Like most, my internal mic no longer works. I have been to the HP support online with technician Soooo many times it's ridiculous. I have flashed Bios, uninstalled, reinstalled, updated all drivers, gone through every step. I have rolled back drivers and installed old driver packs. And guess what? They internal mic still doesnt work. Everyone says "just buy an external mic". My problem with that is that I did not go spend a ton of cash for this machine on the premise that it had everything built in, just to turn around and go buy more crap to drag around with me and plug into it. The machine should perform as it was represented when sold to me.... it HAS the hardware. Apparently, HP, Microsoft, and Conexant will continue to be absolutely worthless in this regard. Is there anyone, please, who can tell me how to fix this ridiculous problem? Any help at all would be most welcome!

Hi Chris,

Microsoft and Conexant are not to blame, it is the HP techs who have not bothered to help you or write working driver software...HP is the only one who can sort your mic issue out because its a laptop with a customized HP chip controlling the Mic input and they are the only ones who have access to the propriety sourcecode, Get the employee number of each tech you speak with at the beginning of the call and then after a few calls if they dont help, start making complaints about each tech and about the sloppy service...

If your still under warranty they are obligated to support your laptop and they can get in serious trouble for not solving that issue because you paid for "working" hardware and if HP will not make proper audio drivers allowing the hardware to be used they can be sued, if all else fails try get a refund if possible and dont buy HP

Re: Problem with Internal Microphone (it isn't working)

Thanks for the reply! I know Microsoft and Conexant are really not responsible, I'm just frustrated regarding this issue. The thing is, I had this problem a while back, and rolled back the driver and got it to work again. Since SP1 was installed, there is no driver edition that will solve the problem. The worse part is, it expired from warranty right before SP1 installed, so I can't make a warranty claim now. I guess I may just be permanently out of luck on this issue. But you can be sure I will never purchase HP again in light of how long this has been an issue and the consistent poor service that this has recieved from HP.
