what is this noise???

I have sound turned off and there is an odd intermittent and sporadic noise that comes from the speakers. It happens when there are no applications open and is not in response to any action. It sounds like a single drop falling into a bucket of water. My computer is only 2 months old and this noise has happened the entire time, even after reinstalling OS (due to crash). What's the deal?

Re: what is this noise???

ummm, do you have things that happen to turn on / off at the same time this happens (notably off)? Such as your air conditioner, a hallway light, refrigerator, etc?

Re: what is this noise???

Also, stats on your computer, or possibly a recording of the sound?

Re: what is this noise???

its all sounding very spooky what with all the talk of light switching on ect

I get a similar problem with speakers on another computer.... it only seems to happen when there is a small blip in the main power supply to my house

It could very well be something as simple as the extension cord or power socket being faulty

Try plugging it in ells where and if it still persists then i suspect that you may need to call an electrician to test you household circuitry

Re: what is this noise???

The noise still happens when it's on battery, so I don't think it's an electrical issue. I've played all of the sounds, and it's none of them. The noise will also happen as a tick and then the drop, but most often the drop of water noise. It probably happens 5 - 6 times within a couple of minutes and then nothing for another few minutes...it never has any predictable frequency.

Re: what is this noise???

What programs do you have installed? Is it possible that you are using some sort of weather application that updates itself every so often? IE has a 'tick' sound when it updates a web page, and some other programs that use IE as a part of their interface will reproduce this sound as well....

Re: what is this noise???

just a quick thought but probably not the cause
you have the sidebar active with the clock gadget... well at least i will guess you have
just disable this gadget to see if it makes a difference
i ask this as on an older system of mine the clock caused several performance issues for myself
