why does vista suck so much? i have an asus m2r32-mvp motherboard and am using the sound card that comes built into the motherboard. I can only get sound out of the center and front speakers on my 5.1 surround set up.
I have gone through the config stuff and can get sound out of all the speakers when i test them in the set up but as soon as i try to listen to music or watch a movie i lose all sub & rear sound. i know that it has to be some sort of glitch or something really simple that i am not doing, because i had it working once before but when i rebooted
the pc i lost it. everytime i try using the asus vista update i lose all sound and get a message that drivers aren't working and that i have to reinstall the drivers.
what do i need to do please? any ideas would be greatly appreciated- thank you.
this set up worked fine and with ease on xp but when i updated to vista the probs started and as i said it did work for a bit; clues?
help please

First off, because you are having an issue does not automatically make it Vistas fault. Secondly, you'll need to supply us with a few more details to help diagnose the problem. Are you running analog output? If so are you running separate outputs for Front, Rear, Centre/LFE? Or are you running spdif output? What kind of audio receiver do you have? What media player (and codecs if approriate) are you using to play music and videos?

My first thoughts on this are that the music you are listening to is 2 channel, what you are hearing is correct. If you want 5.1, either your audio decoder (codec) will need to simulate it or you can do it through the Realtek HD audio control panel. Look for "Environment" and try different settings there. As well check off "Speaker Fill". That is assuming you are using analog outputs. If its digital the adjustments are done through your receiver.

Keep in mind you are not going to get true 5.1 from a 2 channel source, its just a simulation.

each channel- sub, front, rear- have their own ports and channels. The vista install was an upgrade from xp part of the problem could be the RealTek. i used to have access to the realtek mixer and could at touch change how much sound is coming out of each channel but now i cant access the realtek program. i have gone into the upgrade file that is on the asus upgrade disc and have tried opening and updating the realtek options.
the file being used has little to do with the issue. all the music and movies have been used on this pc and had the full surround sound. it is also not codecs as i have tried various programs from zplayer to win media player; nero, winamp, the video players on random websites (cnn, youtube, google vids)- i have gone through the sound section's set up and have tried running in both 5.1 and just for fun 7.1 settings.
i can hear sound during the test (so not ports) and the config says that its set up correctly, but it just doesn't work elsewhere. i can listen/watch whatever i want and not have that sound running through surround and simultaneously go into config settings, run test or choose directly and speaker and get the test tones to function correctly.
hope that answers some of the questions you had; next ideas please?

Did you adjust the environment settings?

Should I? where would this be located at? when i go to cp > sound; I have 2 items- speakers are linked to soundmax integrated digital and spdif interface soundmax integrated. i think it should be a setting somewhere; it has worked before but only a time or 2.
more help please?

Its in the Realtek control panel. Should be an icon of a orange speaker in your system tray.

there is not an icon; how do i get one to show up there? i tried looking for a shortcut option in program menu but i can only uninstall or change (and i think change is actually uninstall)

are there other options? i have reinstalled before only to find myself in this same situation. i have updated drivers, reinstalled them, installed and updated them again- i can do it again but i think i have been down this road before. is there some sort of specific part of vista that blocks the use of soundmax? what about realtek? maybe i have a driver that is out of whack with others as opposed to being the sound card driver specifically?

My Computer

Sorry my bad, I thought that Asus board had a realtek, didn't realize it was a soundmax. Anyhow, I have a soundmax here at work and I can't find any options. I remember reading a while back last year that Vista driver support was really lacking for it, it doesn't look like its really improved. Maybe someone else will have a better idea...
