New Install, MMP can't play anything?

I just installed Vista 64 Ultimate yesterday along with SP1 and then updated fully. I have an X-Fi, so I then went and got the latest Creative drivers for it. The few games I've had a chance to play in this short time sound amazing; however, Windows Media Player no longer seems to be able to play just about anything.

Before I installed SP1 I checked out my media (on another drive) and things seemed fine. Mp3's, wmv/wma, avi and mpg's all played in the new player. Today, I can't seem to get the Windows Media Player to play even a Windows Media Video.

I installed the Microsoft Codec packs stickied at the top of this forum, but got the same message: WMP cannot open this file; whether it's an mp3 or a small wmv video, it just refuses to play. WTF!

The files are not bad. I uninstalled the new codec packs, 32 and 64 (that they didn't work and little to no documentation on how to go about using it didn't help). Then I installed VCL player. The wmv/wma files are fine and play as they should. I then installed WinAmp and see that my mp3's also are just fine. The only problem is the Windows Media Player.

Anyone have a clue how I could fix this?

Re: New Install, MMP can't play anything?

It seems I'm not alone. Invision Power Services > Playing .wmv files in WMP11 on Vista

Can any tell me how to register (or re-register) dll's? The link suggests that I register these two dll's:
regsvr32 wmadmod.dll
regsvr32 wmvdecod.dll

How would I go about doing that?
