| Newbie | Lost all sound after iTunes/Quicktime installation, My computer was working with no problems at all until I decided to download the latest versions of Itunes(7.6.2)/Quicktime(7.5) for some music shopping. At first, everything was still working as usual and I could play my purchased and downloaded music with itunes, winamp and the media player with no issues whatsoever. At the end of my session, I switched off my PC. The next day, however, my sound had completely vanished from my system.I don't get any system sounds, music, streaming audio... nothing at all. After I browsed a multitude of forums, both Apple and Vista, I still could not figure out what my issue was, as I had no hardware issues up to the itunes/quicktime installation. Nothing is muted. Speakers worked fine before the reboot. My Soundblaster X-Fi ExtremeMusic has all the necessary drivers installed and is being recognised fine. My onboard audio is disabled through BIOS. All my codecs and players were working fine until I rebooted, after installing itunes/quicktime.I was using a multitude of players without issues. (Zoom Player,CoreMediaPlayer,Winamp,VLC all worked fine). I used system restore twice, without success. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling codecs and players, without success. Uninstalling itunes/quicktime didn't help. I'm at my wits' end. The problem clearly lies with the itunes/quicktime installation and something it did with my sound output or registry. I think I'm not the only one with this problem, but none of the suggested workarounds/fixes worked for me. I hope someone who had a similar issue can help me fix this, because I really don't want to format and reinstall everything from scratch. Thanks in advance. |

| Newbie | Re: Lost all sound after iTunes/Quicktime installation, It was the first think I did, but it didn't solve my problem. I was very thorough about uninstalling/reinstalling the applications and the codecs. Could my problem have something to do with vista registry ? Thank you for your time and input. |

| Newbie | Re: Lost all sound after iTunes/Quicktime installation, It seems you're trying to help a lot of people and don't have enough time for it. It's pretty obvious to me now that you never bothered reading through my original post. Both of your one-line replies refer to steps I've covered more than once. I also don't understand how you can't bother going into detail with this issue. It's not as if Windows Vista x64 is the first operating system I've ever used with my PC. I've been using Windows 3.1 -->95--->98--->XP--->Vista for about a decade now and I think I've shown in my original post that I'm well aware of how drivers and codecs affect the OS. I was as thorough as possible trying to narrow down the issue to the registry and/or installation preferences. Please read through my original post more carefully and try to hint at a possible solution, otherwise you may lock/delete this thread with my thanks for your time and effort. |

| Newbie | Re: Lost all sound after iTunes/Quicktime installation, My case exactly to the absolute nth degree--I've spent the last two days doing all the things you have to no avail including uninstalling , restore points (to no avail) removing and reinstalling sound system etc etc. In addition I had just finished Skype installation and suspected it also but you've eliminated that for me. No doubt it is the I-Tunes Quick Time update in my book. Have you had any further success?? |

| Newbie | Re: Lost all sound after iTunes/Quicktime installation, My problem duplicated Shoboda after updating both I-Tune and Quicktime. Next morning on booting up all sound function was lost and much research, system restore, removal of problematic(?) programs, reinstallation of my Logitech Speakers, and using msconfig.exe to create a "normal startup" I have successfully regained my sound system. I will now create a restore point and see what I can do to reinstate these items without this real pain problem. |

| Antidisestablishmentarian | Re: Lost all sound after iTunes/Quicktime installation, I am assuming you removed *both* QT and iTunes, so the next step would be to remove *all* of it - QT, iTunes, codecs, *and* audio drivers - then start from scratch. By that I mean perform a SFC /SCANNOW to see if either of those updates modified / replaced a critical Windows Vista related file, specifically some sort of native codec, that might have disabled sound out of your system. |

| Newbie | Re: Lost all sound after iTunes/Quicktime installation, As you recall I had the identical problem. I am back up, same speakers, all audio now fine with reinstalled ITunes and Quicktime and same Logitech 5.1 Speakers. I am now sure it was audio codecs exacerbated by the Itune/Quicktime update as well as the last Vista update install. Cure basically was to remove all audio including the Realtek Sound drivers initially provided by my Gigabyte Mobo and allow the Windows native sound drivers to be the only ones. In the meantime reviewed and edited my Services and Startup tabs in msconfig.exe, as well as using a "cleanup registry" program (many are available, all should be eqally effective. Prior to reinstall of Itunes/Quicktime I created a new Restore Point. I hope this helps--it was probably the most aggravating incident I've had in all the years through Win 3.1, 95,98, 98SE,ME XP and now VISTA!! |
