No audio in videos

Hi,

I've just got a new laptop which has Vista Basic on. Everything seemed fine until I tried playing MPEG 2 videos: the video itself looked fine but there was no audio. I've spent hours on this now and I still can't find an answer to my problem. I'm getting desperate now: any help you can give me would be gratefully received...

When you try to play other types of videos (avi, mpg4, wma, ect), do they work ok?

Ben - avi and wma work fine, only the MPEG2s have a problem. They work fine on a laptop running XP...

Smarteyeball -I've tried installing the VCP pack but it hasn't finxed anything so far. I'm not really too sure what to do with it now I've installed it, to be honest. I have tried running the different MPEG settings, but there's no difference so far, but beyond that it all looks a little confusing.

Hi Starkhart, normally installing the codec pack usually 'should' just work without really having to play with any settings. However, for you it doesen't seem to be the case :(

What player are you trying to play the MPEG2 files in?

Hi both,
I've tried playing them in WMP11, realplayer and Roxio Media Creator 9. Nothing doing...
I'll give VLC media player a go if you think that will work, but i'm not feeling too hopeful. And it won't solve the main problem, wihch is that i want to be able to edit these videos on Roxio...

Could Roxio have done something to it?

Roxio has it's own mpeg2 codec I believe, so it's more than possible the issue may lay there.

I haven't used Roxio myself, so I can't say for certain but firstly I would try having a look in the Roxio settings for MPEG2 output and see if playing with the settings gives you sound. Sorry I can't be more specific :)

Failing that I'd try uninstalling Roxio (making sure the codec is removed) and seeing if that restores sound to your MPEG2. If that works, then it's most probably that particular codec and it's settings. You could either find an alternative to Roxio or try disabling / removing the codec itself. I don't how dependant Roxio is on it's own codecs.
