Recording from a sound board

I am currently trying to run Audacity to record from our sound mixing board to a laptop that has Vista.

On playback, it sounds like the person is talking into a tin can and there is lots of hiss and pops on the line.

When I recorded onto my old laptop with XP, using the same software and levels, I get a perfectly clear signal.

There is no specific line in on the laptop, so I am using the mic input for this. Someone suggested getting an external USB sound card for this, but I don't know what to get and what is Vista compatible.

We should have the option to chose whichever operating system we want put on our pcs and not have to live with whatever they dump on us.

Can anyone help?

I'm currently running Vista 64 bit and I also use Audacity.... if you check the audacity website there is a page with instructions on how to set up "what you hear" recording. I did it once a year ago and can;t completely remember all the things to do but it should still be up on the Audacity web site.

You won;t need an external Sound card or any fancy new sound card.
