Speaker's stop working when unplugged untill program restarts

Here is the situation. I have a new Vista 32x Home Basic. I do not appear to have RealTek HD, what I have under Device Manager is "High Definition Audio Device".

When the speakers are plugged in, and I turn on the computer, all programs' sound works fine. If I unplugged the speakers, and then replugged them in, no sound works, anywhere. If I restart a program, or open a new program, the sound will work fine. Any problems currently running will not have working sound until I restart the program. Windows itself (such as the clicking sound and error sounds) will not have sound itself until I restart Windows, which means a reboot.

Aside from this being a problem, it becomes a real problem when I use my headphones. My speakers plug in the normal green plug in the back. My headphones/Mic use a USB connection. The headphones have the exact same issue as the speakers. I can't easily plug in the headphones or plug back in the speakers because of this issue, and I can't leave the headphones in when not in use since they override the speakers (Speakers seem to never receive sound when headphones are plugged in, which I assume is on purpose). I can't just unplugged the headphones and have the speakers work, because if the program turn on with the output going to headphones, the speakers won't work until the program is restarted.

Problem 1) What I've listed above
Problem 2) Can headphones and speakers be set to both receive sound at the same time? While this doesn't fix the above issue, it would make it so that the above issue wouldn't affect me, as I could leave them both plugged in all the time, and just mute whichever I don't want at the time.

Thank you for any help.

Re: Speaker's stop working when unplugged untill program restarts

I don't think this will give you exactly what you are looking for but it is the best I could find to suit my purposes.

Make sure your speakers are plugged in and your USB earphones are not.

Go to Control Panel - Double click the Sound Icon-Select the Playback Tab.

Right click the device that shows your speakers. Select "Set as Default" (even if it is already shown as the default playback device". Open Media center or anything that will send audio through your speakers. Make sure they work.

Plug in your USB headset and wait until the icon shows up in the playback devices tab. Right click and select "Set as Default". Run some audio and make sure you hear it through the headset.

Now if you unplug the headset you should hear the system sound, see the speaker device item get the checkmark and hear any audio through the speakers. If you plug the headset back in you should hear the system sound, see the heaset icon get the checkmark, and hear the audio through the headset again.

It is kind of flakey if no audio devices are plugged in. Depending on your audio card, drivers the system may or may not pick it up if you plug in the speakers. It SHOULD always pick it when you plug in or unplug the USB device.

Re: Speaker's stop working when unplugged untill program restarts

I just fixed this problem on my computer today. Looked around at several websites and could not find the answer. I messed around a little bit and found out it was the Audio Driver. I switched to Realtek High Definition Audio and it works great! Here's the link... |MG| Realtek High Definition Audio for VistaWin 7 2.25 Download
