Headphone Jack??

I have a GW M6307 with Vista HP 32bit. The headphone jack has suddenly stopped working.
I have done a restore back to when it was working..uninstalled and reinstalled audio drivers without results. The IDT control panel indicates something else is plugged into the jack both for the mic and HP. I also reinstalled the MS audio drivers that came with the machine. I cannot find any default anywhere to change any setting regarding this. The laptop speakers work but the default to HP when plugged in does not. The speakers conitnue to play with no sound in the HP.There are no indications of a loose connection and the laptop sits on a desk most of the time. I realize this could be a hardware failure but it's hard to believe and I know the headphones work with other devices.
Does any know where a default setting exists or how to confirm a hardware failure??

If the HP works on other devices ..then its Ok....
So must be your pc .......
Go to device manager ... uninstall the sound card driver ... REBOOT IMMEDIATELY..."Let your pc install the original driver back"...
(BTW..When its plugged in..try to wiggle the cable ..see if it make any connection.?)

Thanks tek101, followed your advise. No fix. Wiggling shows no indication of a lose connection. Unless there is a setting somewhere I am missing????
Do you think usb headphones would work??
This must be a hardware failure.

OK..so far I don't think its your Pc's problem...
Try another HP ... maybe..?
(JUst for the heck of it.....run wds auto updates ..see if MS has new update for your sound card ....Also..go to gateway support to download new update or original driver...Never know if the driver is corrupting..)

Hello Again..I have used 3 sets of HP I know work on other devices. So that's out. The driver that loads automatically is a MS HD driver that shipped with the box. This works but no HP. HP worked with that before. The GW site has a updated IDT(SimgaTel) HD driver which also works but no HP. This driver loads a line item to services which allows for the monitoring of the Jacks. This indicates that "some other device" is plugged into the jack for both the mic and HP. The HP worked with this driver until it suddenly stopped. That's when I did a restore to no avail. I'm going to download the IDT driver again using the zip file, not the .exe method and go from there. Thanks for sticking with me on this.I'll post back.Like you I just cannot believe this is hardware related.

Well I am at my witts end. I downloaded the IDT updated driver from the GW site. It installed OK and the pc speakers work fine. The jack monitor still shows some other device is plugged in and the HP do not work. The plug and jack seems to seat correctly with no noise or anything. Short of taking a screw driver to this thing I exhausted all my options.
Would usb HP work?? Is there another option to getting HP sound?? Any other suggestions?? I don't like openning up this notebook!!

Ok...Do a quick checking, see if you acidentally trun off the HP.:

Control panel.....Hardware/sound....manage audio/device....You should see:
"SPEAKER/HEAD PHONE" .....(NOT SPEAKER ONLY)..iF NOT..left click .."High line it"
Click ...properties....:NOW ... you should see "Sigmatel HD Audio driver:

Set.. "DEVICE USAGE" ..to... 'USE THIS DEVICE (Enable) ..Apply ...OK..

I hope ..thats it.

Super good luck .

No Luck.. I even tried other drivers that worked with the MB. They worked with speakers but no HP. I still do not believe this is a connector problem.Something has detected that the Jacks, both the mic and HP have a device plugged in.
Thank you for your effort to help. At this point I will need to see what I can use to get Audio thru the USB ports. Any advice along those lines. I really need the HP. Thanks Again.
