Realtek will not let me select 5.1 surround sound

Hi, I've read as much posts as I could before my eyes started to cross. I need help :(

I have a Vista Home Premium, 32 bit .
I have a Realtek HD sound card.

I've tried everything I could think of. I went into the sound properties, keep tryin to configure it to play a 5.1 sound system ( i recently got a hold of a Altec Lansing ADA995) and it shows the option to set it to a 5.1 surround sound but for some reason vista wont let me select that option?

I'd appreciate any help

Well I finally found how to make the Realtek Subwoofer work (thanks to Neecole) but it's so faint, you can hardly hear it. How do you change that.

I don't have Realtek Mic but an old Mcally. Not certain how to activate it as it doesn't show up in the window in Audio Manager.

I also cannot get AOL Webmail alert anymore suddenly. Not sure if it conflicts w/some possible yahoo widgets or something? Any ideas? Thanks so much.

I was having the same issue as you guys until I updated my Drivers. Once I did that, I unplugged all my audio cables and started inserting one by one letting the wizard guide me as to what it was for... Front, Center, Rear, Subwoofer, etc, etc

NOw, I am not sure about this but, if your onboard audio is not capable of HD and/or your audio drivers are not HD drivers, I doubt that you'll be able to achive 5.1 sorround... I could be totally wrong on this one though!

Well, actually I did an uninstall and reinstall of the drivers and the whole Realtek software. Everything works fine except the lil sub on the floor (which does have sound, just very low) and all other sounds EXCEPT aol webmail.

I've spent many hrs w/HP, McAfee and Comcast trying to figure out what happened, lol. Thanks for the suggestions tho.

Hopefully, someone will have some other suggestions as well.

Appreciate your time.
