Hi there. Since I turned my laptop on from hibernate/sleep I have had a sound problem. I have a RED X marked on the "speakers/audio" icon on the taskbar. All my drivers / updates are up to date. I am using the Windows audio drivers as the Dell IDT ones are rubbish.

I have researched this via google...used all the so called solutions/fixes...but none of them work.

I used this:-

A high definition audio device may no longer work after you resume Windows Vista from hibernation or from sleep

It says the update is not relevant for me.

Tried uninstalling & reinstalling drivers... multiple restarts...still does not work..

Also booted via Vista disc(Dell provided)...it used startup fix....this did not work.

The above shows the services do not work. Even right clicking trying to start / restart it does not work...I get this error:-

I've even tried to get copies of those files via another Vista pc..but it says I cannot replace/delete files as I don't have priviledge...even though I am an ADMIN..

Furthermore sfc /scannow does not work :(

Whats going wrong here guys? I simply started up from a hibernation to find this error...& after 12 hours is really stressing me out now.. I do not want to reinstall Vista & loose my data...that would be my last resort (I'd back up data first)...

have you guys tried a repair install of vista? (you can just click upgrade on the install disc) and see if that works, failing that, what about system restore to before the problem occured?

oops sorry for late reply. I gave up on this forum as no one wanted to help...

But the fix is ..like mentioned above..

System restore...Or Enter Vista disc..Click REPAIR(keeps files/settings etc) and then it will work.

I used REPAIR..

I know this is a very old thread but I had the same issue the other day and the problem was finally located to a very simple problem: The services are running under the wrong logon settings

For some reason it appears the dell drivers are set to run and logon as a 'Local System'. This means it does not have permission to see the driver files.

To fix the issue amend the service to run as 'Local Service', reboot and all should be well.
(You can amend it either via the properties setting in Services or RegEdit)
