Hey guys! I'm trying to put together an HTPC user interface and I've got some things I would like to do with parts of Vista but don't quite know how. Specifically, I would like to find a way to change the way that the Vista Audio Mixer Volume(master volume) looks. Additionally, I need to find a way to display volume controls(always on top unless any given media player is in full screen mode) and access them through a remote or hotkeys all the time. I would also like to display L/R power meters.
All the applications and programs I have found so far do work on XP but none of them control the master volume within Vista. I did download Visual Basic and Windows SDK to see what I could do about applying a "skin" or write a new display/controls application but I'm not a programmer and I'm not even sure whether I'm on the right track.
Any ideas? Where to look? How to do it?

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line... in the opposite direction.
