please help picking out a good sound card

To be honest, it depends on what you are gonna be using the soundcard for. For fifty bucks, roughly thirty pounds in UK money, then you maybe limited.
If its audiophile and gaming stuff..ie..allround..then I highly recommed the Auzentech Prelude. Its a lot more than fifty dollars, but well worth the investment.
