I have a HP Pavillion Elite d5200t and like an idiot I just installed an update from MicroSoft for Relteck today that has killed my sound. My windows media player has no sound but if you go to sound in control panel the realtek is OK and the bar is going up and down but I get no sound out of my speakers. Everything was working OK before this update. Has anyone run into this yet and if so what was the fix? Forgot to add and I'm using Vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit. Creative sound card is working OK. I rolled back the driver, but that didn't help.

Try uninstalling the driver completely, rebooting, then installing the driver from hp's driver site for your machine. I've had this happen a few times, it's qutie annoying...

Device manager > find the correct sound driver > right click it > properities > uninstall

when installing realtek sound drivers, the instructions say to run the setup, then reboot. then run setup AGAIN.
the first time you run setup, it is UNINSTALLING the sound drivers.

wait, if you have a creative sound card, why are you installing realtek drivers?
Go to the creative website (or even HP) and download the latest drivers to your sound card and install them after UNinstalling the realtek ones

It's possible to have a sound card in a PCI slot and a sound chip onboard. I have realtek on my mobo. And a realtek update messed up my sound as well. Strange as my speakers come straight out of my card.

I know that is possible Lemur as I too have integrated and dedicated sound on my computer, but this is often less likely with laptops.

Squid13 What I think you should do is go into Device manager and check if you have more than one sound card, or to go into Windows volume mixer and see if you can change which card is your default sound card under properties in there (this can change if your pc plays sound or not)

No worries Lemur, happens to the best of us mate.

You are NOT wrong, there are USB sound cards and card slot sound cards for Laptops (so he could have 2 without knowing) But we will never know, because noone ever updates their specs when posting...

I got tired of messing with it. I made an image of my drive this morning so I just restored my image and all is working as advertised. Thank God for Acronis. I didn't loose anything so all is well.
